Can i take my dogs hiking in the snow?

Its about 20 degress with a .25 inch of snow on the ground and i was thinking about taking the dogs hiking. I worry about their paws though with longterm exposure to the snow. Thoughts? One is a 40 lbs. heeler mix and the other a Weim. The weim has a coat. thanks

  1. My dog goes with me 2 miles everyday. It was below zero (F) this AM. He is a mostly heeler and loves it.
  2. i'd take them. dogs feet are built for many different types of terrain. and 20 isn't really that cold. provided that you aren't walking on sharp ice, your dogs should be just fine.
  3. I have lived in northern Minnesota for years and walk everyday with my dogs. They love the cold and snow. It's fine to go hiking with your dogs. If you are concerned, purchase dog boots. They are inexpensive, and sled dogs have been wearing them for years. The boots are light weight, and a velcro strap keeps them from falling off.
  4. 20 degrees is not very cold for a dog. Remember their temperature is also higher than ours, as well. Dogs are born to walk. Just make sure that your dogs don't get dehydrated. It's fine for them to eat snow (not yellow snow) but make sure it doesn't have any pine needles in it. Or, you can always bring water with you, just make sure its not frozen! When you get inside, wipe your dog off from all of the snow, and make sure his/her paws are not cut. And, clean off any sand or chemicals that might have gotten on his paws! Be careful of ice too!! I have an english bulldog puppy, and she loves taking a walk in the snow!! I actually had her outside for two hours the other day! It was about 20 degrees here!
