Who else has problems with their Maine Coon Cats?

Our Maine Coon kitty doesn't like to poop in his litter box. He is 4 years old and we got him from some friends not too long ago. We already had a cat. Apparently he has always used two litter boxes. One he always pees in and the other he poops in. Well the cat we already had doesn't know that habit so she goes in both boxes. I understand that he probably doesn't like that. But we have even tried clumpable litter and we scoop everything out a couple times a day. It still doesn't work and he will poop right outside of the litter box. I heard through a friend that their Maine Coon cat does the same thing. Sometimes, it will ball articles of clothing up and use the bathroom on them. Fortunately mine is not that bad but is this common in Maine Coon cats?? I need to know because my husband is ready to find him a new home. Please help. Thanks! We have had him now for about 3 months. And there is no way that we can have more than two litter boxes in the house. We have a townhouse and two is enough.

  1. When we moved with our Maine Coon, he did the same thing. He was about 3 at the time. Had him for 2 years with no problems. He started crapping in the tub, dining room corner, on clothes. Took him to the vet and ruled out any physical problem. The vet put him on "kitty prozac" (Can't remember the actual name of the drug). Anyway in less than a month, we were back to normal. I think the drug was about $10.00 for a months supply. Didn't even have to finish the bottle. It was just enough to take the edge off till he got use to the new house. Some cats just hate when things change. Hope this helps, Good Luck

Or alittle cat fight but we spray him with water and that usally stops the fighting . ( tHIS IS tottaly off topic but my maine coon has problems ) ! Romeo has allredy bitten me, my mom, my dad ,my baby sister ,and a big nasty bite on my neighbor . Oh yeah and when my brother was little Romeo CLAWED his eye and we had to take my brother n the emergancy room ! IT WAS SSCARRY !!!
  3. All cats are finiky in odd ways. He may take some time to get used to a new situation. A good idea is to have 3 litter boxes and clean them out every day. That would help. I love my Coonies!! They are the most wonderful goofy, sweet, loving cats! Good luck with your new gentlman
  4. I don't know if it's common in Maine Coon's or not. My other one was not picky at all with the litter. The one I have now will not use it unless it's been cleaned immediately after it's been used. Fortunately, I work at home and I have the litter boxes right upstairs from my office so I can hear when either cat uses it. I have three boxes with two cats and I do keep on top of them just because I know how he is and I'm afraid he'll start going outside the box. I haven't noticed that they're using one box for one thing and the other for another, but then again, like I said, I have two cats, so the other cat could be using the boxes for both too... I never really paid attention.. LOL, now you asked this question, I'm going to start watching though. As of right now, all three boxes are being used for everything. But I think you're right, I think Maine Coon's, from what I'm seeing with this one anyhow, may just be a little more fussy then other cats about litter boxes. My Persian could care less which one she uses or if she uses it right after him so I know she's nowhere near as picky as him about it. And you're fine with two litter boxes. They each have their own so that's plenty.
  5. Have you considered getting the catgenie? it cleans and sanitizes the litter for you and would eliminate the smell of the litter box, so the main coon should be able to use it for both urine and feces.
