Cross Breeds

Can mixed breeds make good service dogs?

My dog Duke I think would make a good service dog! Because he is quiet and friendly and smart and he don't bite people. He's a Lab/rottie mix He is 2. But I can still teach him things and he will learn it.

  1. Well they use Labs in service dogs for many things an dive seen rotties in police and rescue services. Takes allot of training and time to do that, they start that training where there a few months old.
  2. take him to one of the training session thingies and find out. it sounds like it but im not sure that they allow mixes...
  3. It would depend ! if he is old then it will be harder to train him ! but if he is young then he will do good !
  4. cool im mixed too
  5. i heard that mutts are the friendliest dogs. but then again i heard that mixed labs can be bad. So im not sure about those two mixes, maybe you should watch and see if he's hyper.
  6. yeah, as long as you give it proper training and balanced meals. i have a street dog and he can do all sorts of tricks like bite people and pee on my bed.
  7. You might train him to be a volunteer like the dogs that go visiting kids and nursing homes. But most service organizations only use pure bred and also require AKC registration. I had a black lab once who we had to give away because the landlord wouldn't let us put in a fence and he loved to run in the yard. We called around and interviewed service organizations and he is now an aid dog to a hearing inpaired person. But they required him to be AKC
  8. Mixed breeds make very good service dogs.. but they must start their training,. when they are very young... it is something.. they are just born with.. either they have it or they don't duke wouldn't want to be anywhere else .. .but with u.. good luck
