Cross Breeds

Why are mixed breeds more expensive then pure breeds?

When you look in the paper ther are so many mixed breeds and they are seling for thousands of dollars. Then there are the pure breed and you can get some that five hundred dollars. So What gives?

Public Comments

  1. Because the people who sell mutt puppies in the paper are just looking for a sucker? They know there are people dumb enough to pay it, so that's what they advertise.
  2. Because the mixes you find in the paper belong to unscrupulous breeders who are in it for the money. They give their "mutts" a cutesy name, call them rare, and manage to convince idiots to pay that price!
  3. These people are breeding mutts to make money. Since people are willing to pay that much for their dogs, why should they be priced lower?
  4. It's a marketing ploy.....people like "designer dogs" so they pay top dollar for a mutt!!
  5. because some people Use pure bred dogs to make mixed breeds and they think that they can get more out of a dog that they put 2 pure breeds in . Purebreds always get problems of some kind so Your probably better off getting a mixed breed anyway
  6. Well, why would you look in the paper for a mixed breed, when you have hundreds to choose from at a local shelter/rescue? People indulge themselves on people who are actually willing to pay a large price, for a mixed breed. As long as there are people willing to pay that price, there will be people who expect that price. Just don't be one of those people. :)
  7. Well sometimes the "purebred" dogs have been interbred so much that they have life endangering faults. Sometimes (as with pugs) breeding with other breeds will give you a puppy with similar looks and temperament, but without out those faults caused by inbreeding. When you have your heart set on a certain kind of puppy, but know that it has breathing, skin, eye problems, or congenital defects, wouldn't it be nice to be able to buy a puppy that looks like what you want, without all those problems?
  8. they said my dog was a moodle and they charged $800! so yes , the poodle crosses are expensive but they are mutts!
  9. thats becuase there designer mutts... and people are trying to pull them off as being " the latest thing" it's the same idea with the I-Phone people buy it becuase it new and fresh..... designer dogs are the same thing~ there is nothing wrong with mixed breeds but i don't like desginer breeds..... its people trying to make a quick buck for something you can get off the street..... ( not say mixes are bad) with mixes you have not idea there background lines or temperment... thats why AKC is good becuase you can breed for temperment and health....
  10. It is a gimmick. They cross all kinds of what they call breeds and make mutts. What they cant sell when they are in the cute puppy stage ends up at the dog pound ..with a needle at the back of the neck tossed in a cheap black plastic tie bag. How do I know this....My Dad has been an Animal Control Officer for 30 years. When the "designer breeds" came into being the homeless puppy population boomed. The puppy gets to the long leg langley looking stage and off the dog pound they go while there are several at home being bred to make more cute puppies.... I hate despise wish they would rot in hell every back yard breeder to put it lightly.
  11. it just depends on the market and what will sell. when i was a kid these were mutts and they were given them away. now their designer dogs. if you want a mix go to a shelter or rescue they usually are alot cheaper than the paper.
  12. For some reason, people who don't know any better think it's somehow special to have a dog that is a combination of two different breeds. I can't figure it out - but the booby prize is that they almost always have one flaw or another that is directly related to the fact that they are a cross - they are often much bigger than either breed that went into the cross, and therefore very hard to manage on a leash, and often less trainable. This happens because instead of homogenizing all the genes in a single breed, they often end up with the recessive genes in either breed - genes that everyone has been working for years to suppress! They end up with 'exotic' wiry coats or stubborn hard to train dogs, or dogs that bark a lot - you name it, whatever it is lurking back there, you need both sides to shove it back in the closet, and if you try and involve a dog who has a different set of genes, it quite often backfires. Anyone who falls for this scheme deserves to be parted with their money, and end up with whatever it is they think they asked for!
  13. Here's what the ad is telling you: Yorkiepoo! ADORABLE Yorkie/Poodle mix puppies for sale. These new designer breeds are all the rage, a must have! $1000, $2000+. One of these two things is what actually happened: 1) An irresponsible dog owner neglected to spay their Yorkie. Their next door neighbor, equally irresponsible, neglected to neuter their Poodle. When the Yorkie was in heat, irresponsible owner 1 of course didn't keep her away from other dogs. Whoops, she's pregnant. Hey, her puppies are going to qualify as a designer breed! Maybe they can make some money off these accidents by slapping a cute name on them! 2) They came from a puppy mill, disgusting, abusive places whose only purposes are to breed unhealthy mixes. These horribly bred puppies were dumped into a pet store to be sold for small fortunes just because they're "Yorkiepoos" or whatever and they are "SOOOO cute!"
  14. Some brilliant BYB slapped the word "designer" on a dog and some idiotic rich ppl not only went along, but CONTINUE to go along with it. LMAO @ them because a many of these so called designer dogs are predisposed to various genetic impurities/diseases! I'll stick with my mutt @ a mutt price, thanx!(that way I can still afford regular vet visists!)
