Mixed breeds?
So is everyone against mixed breeds, or just paying an huge amount for a mixed breed? Just curious what the underlying problem is?

- I have no problem with mixed breeds. I think mixed breeds make wonderful pets. I have a problem with people intentionally making MORE mixed breed puppies when millions are killed in shelters every year because there aren't enough homes for them. I have a problem with people slapping "cutesy" names on "designer dogs" to make people think that they should pay MORE for a mixed breed as though it were something rare and precious, when in fact millions of them are killed in shelters every year because there aren't enough homes for them.
- Deliberately breeding them. There are enough mutt dogs, we don't need to breed "designer" dogs on purpose. The fact people pay big money for them is just their own stupidity. Mutts rule! They really are the best pets. Just because a mutt's parents are from "champion lines" doesn't mean the puppy is pure bred. It doesn't mean the puppy is higher quality. It's still a mutt!
- The problem with mixed breeds is that they are usually the product of irresponsible breeding. People are breeding these poor dogs and selling them for huge amounts of money. There are enough shelter dogs out there already. By the way, I own a 'designer' breed. But, she was a rescue. No way would I pay over a grand for a mixed breed!
- I am against irresponsible people breeding their dogs that turn out to be mixed breeds, and then they try to sell them as DESIGNER dogs for extremely high prices. All these DESIGNER dogs are, are unwanted litters, or the owner trying to make a quick buck. I am not against mixed breeds in general, I just believe that if you want a mixed breed you should get it from a shelter and save a dog from death row.
- Well all on this site call them Mutts, but this isn't true,as many mixed breed pets are from champion lines and are known to be healthier than a purbred dog.
- Mixing breeds? I saw a show on NG channel the other night about breeding dogs. It says that dogs are developing all these breed specific illnesses due to our breeding of them. Breeding them for their certain jobs way back when. Even today people breed dogs to get certain wanted characteristics, like good smell for drug dogs, or good sight for hunting dogs..whatever..and the result of all this selective breeding has hurt dogs, because they have a genetic flaw that makes it easy to breed selectivly, at the same time making them more suseptible to illnesses and diseases, like cancer, hip problems.etc.
- I don't dislike mixed breeds, and I don't dislike paying large amounts for them. I just think that there are SO many over population problems, that we should leave all breeding to...simply...BREEDERS. Certified, breeders. And unless there is going to a mixed breed breeder (which there are) dont' breed!
- im not upset with mixed breeds, i do think that pure breds are better, i don't think tht it's a big deal paying a huge amount for a mixed bred a long as it isn't an extra amount. alot of the mixed breeds have less health problems which is good. now a days alot of people have mixes, except for me i have a 6 month old sheltie. she's so cute.
- The problem I have is breeding them on purpose, or purposely not spaying/neutering them. Few people want mixes; they all want purebreds because of certain characteristics that would cause the purebred to fit into their lifestyle best. Therefore, breeding a mixed breed would be bringing an unwanted animal into the world. I wouldn't mind if most purebreds became extinct. While the pit bull can be a wonderful dog, if it is allowed to breed, it will keep on being used for dogfighting, no matter how strong the laws are enforced. The dachshund, cardigan/pembroke welsh corgis, and basset hound have legs too small to carry them properly. Pugs, bulldogs, shih tzus, and boxers have squashed noses that cause them to have difficulty breathing. Would it be so cruel to simply not allow them to reproduce? It would not be painful.
- If you want a mixed breed, great! If you want to pay a thousand dollars for it, even better-the animal shelter will be THRILLED at such a donation! Don't buy so someone else can fill their wallet. We have plenty of lovely mixes at the shelter. In fact, as far as that goes, if you want a purebred, don't want to show it, could care less about lineage/ancestry...breed rescues and/or petfinder is the perfect place to start!
- I doubt anyone is "against" mixed breeds, they can be wonderful pets, just unscrupulous breeders trying to convince innocent buyers that they should spend a lot of money for a mutt. There are so many mixed breeds, all kinds, shapes, and sizes, waiting in shelters for good people to come take them home, that it is positively immoral to breed more.
- My biggest tconcern is that these dogs are intentionally mixed solely for monetary gain, and with no regard to the puppy's future health or welfare. They are frequently intentionally bred by people wiht little to no knowledge of gentics or socialization needs of the puppies, and no idea where to find them the best homes. They have no desire to keep track of the puppies they have produced or to be responsible for them beyond cashing the buyer's check. There are enough 'accidental' puppies in the world to satisfy the desires of pet owners preferring mixed breeds without adding more.
- I have two mutts/mixed bred dogs I'm not against them they make wonderful pets.I think the underlying problem is when people purposely breed mutts when we have millions of dogs being put down that were breed because someone thought it was a grand idea.Admittedly some were accidents but with today's knowledge of the pet overpopulation(not just dogs) accidents should NEVER happen. Pets should be spayed/neutered when young.Breeding should be left to professionals.
- I refuse to purchase a pure bred dog. I've only had bad luck with pure bred pets. My last dog was a pure bred, show quality pomeranian. She ended up having horrible hips (dislocated all the time!) and a congenital heart defect, that ended up killing her at the tender age of 5. She also lost all of her hair when she was 4. I changed her food multiple times, had numerous tests done one her, and we never figured out what was going on with her. It was too much heartbreak for me to ever go through again. I have made a vow to never have a pure bred dog again. I now am the happy parent of a cockapoo (Cocker-poodle mix), and he is the love of my life :)
- Breeds that are mixed purposely are called designer like the yorkie-poo, shihpoo, labradoodle, and puggle. They just breed them to make an "ideal" dog, because they re cute, most are mixed with poodle or another hypoallergenic dog, so they dont shed, and its cool to say their names. A lot of people who breed these dogs dont care about the health of their puppies, just money. Most mixed dogs are also from accidental breeding, un-neutered and un-spayed dogs because of irresponsible dog owners. Which most of them end up in shelters, or on the streets. I think most mixed breeds do make great pets, but a lot of them were bred for wrong reasons.
- I for one am firmly in the camp of the good old mutt. I know...I know, they don't have pedigrees etc but frankly I don't care. I've owned pure breds and can certainly appreciate the qualities of each breed, the ones I've acquired as an adult have been rescue dogs. In my experience, the mutts I've owned have been the healthiest most sound physically specimens of dogs I could want. There will always be mutts and those that love them, there will always be purebreds and those who will love and pay for them. What I don't get is people designing cross breeds and giving them unlikely names and charging dearly for them. If it ain't no purebred it is a mutt.....period. If you can't register it as a purebred it is a mutt....period. Call it what you want. I'm probably not popular with some by THIS point but thats what can happen when I express my views..........LOL I do love most all dogs though, just won't pay alot. Being a low income earner is certainly a factor, and no need for a label or accessory is a factor too.
- I'm against pay a huge amount for any dog. anything about 200 is too much. I guess if you are going to show the dog its a little different but most people don't show so its too much
