Now that Prop.3 (banning dog racing) has been passed (in MA) - what happens to all the dogs?
I know hundreds of people are going to be losing their jobs - but what happens to the dogs? There's like 1,200 dogs! Shelters are full - are they going to kill them all?
Public Comments
- Probably. :(
- there are various different rescue groups who will try and take most of them in. typically they go to foster families until suitable homes can be found.
- I guess a lot will be killed by the owners. But the owners did that anyway if the dog stopped running well. Hopefully Greyhound Rescue people will help find new homes. Eventually there will not be many if there is no reason to breed them.
- They'll be sent to China and Korea.
- I guess they might be shipped out of state if they're promising racers, or will be euthanized and sent to the landfill. My best guess is that maybe a handful will go elsewhere, and the rest will simply be killed.
- There are organizations that help greyounds(or other race dogs) get adopted. Unfortunately those who don't find homes will be euthanized. That's why adopting a greyhound is a great idea.
- Many of those dogs could be taken to remote areas and dumped, which used to be a common practice and probably still is.
- that is a stupid ban. Greyhounds were born to run but yes unfortunately most will probably be put to death
- These beautiful and gentle animals are, in essence, contract employees. They retain value only if their services are profitable to the owner. Barring a position to fill, they are "let go". But, lets face facts, horses in the racing profession suffer the same fate if they fail to produce. If can be a tough world if you are a primary source of protein in another culture! Japan slaughters sharks for their fins, and whales for their oils and assorted body liquids. I firmly believe most whales are more intelligent than the people who kill them. One day, perhaps, we will look back in horror. Perhaps never. Or, one day, sometime hundreds of times more intelligent than us, might fly in from nowhere, and start harvesting us for their tables. Pass the sauce? PS: Did you know a pig is much more intelligent than the average dog? Used to hunt with in Europe in past centuries, and trained to find Truffles in France today. How do you think I feel? Nothing to "Snort" at, in my opinion!
