Cross Breeds

What is appealing about seeking out particular mixed breeds?

I'm not talking about dogs at the animal shelter. I'm talking about people who say they want to get one of those muttadoodles and they are adamant it must be the specific mix they are looking for. If they like the breed traits, why not get one breed or the other? What appeal does the "mix" carry? There's no guarantee which traits the puppy will get from which parent.

  1. Some people want those microscopic dogs that can fit in their palm. Some people will see a mix breed dog, maybe a rescue that is either 'soooo cute!' or 'sooooo obedient' or 'sooooo darling/stunning/tiny/etc.' It's like a fad now.
  2. I think people are after the popular thing. I don't know why they focus on mixes when they have existed since the beginning of time. I always advise that they go to a shelter, because the dog they are looking for is probaly there. Unfortunately, as long as having a whats-a-doodle is "cool", people will want them.
  3. Because I saw Paris Hilton with one and it's sooooo cute! I don't understand it... my beagle is most likely a mix, and he's pretty cute too.
  4. 1) IGNORANCE 2) GREED 3) IMPULSIVE PURCHASE "Doodles" because they're "shedless." Yeah, right. "Teacups" because of Paris and Britney - thanks, dumb idiot useless pop tarts "Puggles" because people think watching a dog struggle to breathe is cute "Any/everything-Poo" because you're in the mall and "Daddy I want I want I want I want I want" - same as parking the kid in front of the boob tube as a babysitter- anything to get them to shut the hell up. Hey Abbyful, did you see my new question? Someone dumped a litter of Papillions on our shelter. Thought Paps NEVER ended up in pounds- let's breed 'em all!
  5. "If they like the breed traits"... You are assuming that they have researched the breed traits. I suspect they probably haven't. Maybe they've met a dog that was that particular mix and have decided that's the dog they want (not realising that a lot of luck was involved in that great mutt). Maybe they've heard from somebody else how wonderful that mix is. Maybe they like both (or all 3, 4, 5...) breeds and think they'll get the best of each. Maybe they owned that mix before... On the other hand, maybe they've researched both breeds, are prepared for what they've decided is the "worst" of each and are hoping for some of the better qualities will shine through - as a bonus. Maybe they are looking for a dog that specifically has some traits of one breed and some of another. They *might* get a dog that does x,y,z... It's certainly no worse than getting a purebred without doing any research.
  6. Abbyful, do you seriously have to ask this? Have you not learned yet from the billions about millions of Questions yet? Well, there are some very common reasons why people buy Mutts oops, sorry "Designer dogs" ( PUKE!!!!!!!!! ). Here are some of the most popular reasons that I have seen: 1. Because some dumb Celebrity has one and they want to be like Him/Her ( usually HER ) 2. Because "they look SO cute!!!!!!!!!" 3. Because the Back Yard Breeder/Back Yard Greeder has put some dorky "designer" ( PUKE! ) name on it so it sounds cool ( IMO it sounds like something you find in at the dump ) like PomaPoo, Chiwiener, Matlipoo, Dorky, Chorki, Yorkipoo, etc..... 4. Because the BYB who breed them only breed runts to runts, and so on and so on, so now the pups become smaller and smaller ( only in some cases, in others, the BYB just say that they are smaller when they are actually as big as a wellbred pup ) so now the Girls want them, so they can take them to the mall and whatever the crap. 5. Because "designer dogs" (PUKE! ) are apparently "Instyle" as some people would say ( WTC?? They are not some sort of accesory!!!! ) They obviously dont go for the breed traits, since Mutts dont have "breed" traits, seeing as they aren't a breed. I think the most popular reason people go for the mutts is because they look cute. Its the same way with Purebreds. Ah, I do wish these BYB would all go fall in a ditch. It would make life so much easier!
  7. The appeal is egotistical and ignorance based... they somehow think mixes are in some way better or healthier or better tempered and they think it is cutsie to have cutsie little names when basically it is some attempt to make themselves feel like they are something special when actually they are part of the 99%ers :(
  8. I'd have to say #1 is ignorance. They hear "teacup cutiepoodoody" and think it's a real breed, or bred well, with real standards and personality traits. They see one and think the one they get will be the same like a real purebreed. And how many times do you hear people saying "maltipoo or any poo won't shed" #2 popularity and availability. Labradoodles and puggles are the most popular ones I see..and bybs are eager to get those puppies for sale because it's in style. #3. well this can fall under ignorance too. They have no idea where they should be getting a dog from, or doing any research.
  9. I have no clue at all. I took my guys to the weekly dog park visit today, and there was a (get this) "Mini Goldendoodle". Are you effing kidding me? It looked like a poodle who was overfed with a giant slanting fore-head. And to top it all off, it had an attitude problem with every dog there, its temperament was horrible, six or seven times the woman had to break up a fight between her dog and another, it was outrageous! I asked her what she liked about the 'breed', and why she had to go miniature, and here was her response: "I liked the basic look of the goldendoodle, it was large like a golden, but with hair like a poodle. And the miniature fit into my lifestyle. He doesn't shed, doesn't bark, he's great with kids, and he's a saint with other dogs. I can't see why someone wouldn't want this mix!" Not only was she delusional about the breed, but she was out of connection with earth about the dog itself! I had my toy poodle with me (who is groomed up with quarter inch hair, "boots", and long ears), and she literally asked me "is that the new micro goldendoodle?" Sparky only weighs eight pounds, and I'd like to think he doesn't look like a mop-faced mutt. I furthered on to ask her how much she paid, and I nearly peed my pants. "$4500 upfront, he came with registration papers and everything!"
