the question is pretty straightforward.

- http://northernhorse.com/wildhorses/History.htm They say that they aren't really a specific breed, but descended from domestic horses brought by early settlers. Hope that helps.
- Alberta has had several very distinct herds of "wild" horses. I say wild loosely because they are all domesticated horses origionately that went loose and reproduced without human interference for many years. There are still a few herds of un-owned horses in the Rocky mountains. If you ride in the Nordegg or Ya-Ha-Tinda area you need to be aware they are there, and protect your own horses (especially if you are on a mare) Then there are the Block Horses. In southeast Alberta there is the Suffield Millitary base, which is a 60 mile square area that was once owned by the British Block before the Canadian military owned it. For many years farmers turned out there horses to graze there. Then in the 1960 the area was fenced off and for fourty years the horses lived there in a very wild state. Recently they were all rounded up and auctioned off. Several ranchers inthe area have become very involved with Block horses, and have researched their history carefully. The breed no longer runs wild but are now owned by Albertans. Those are the two distinct herds I know of in Alberta. And I live in central Alberta, so hopefully I'm fairly up to date.
