Way back when the site started they had a gray cat picture with a cheezeburger comment that was one of the first images that got a ton of response, so they've been playing off that for a long while. You'll see the same with the ceiling cat, basement cat, monorail cat, long cat, drill cat and the Lolrus bucket.
