Cross Breeds

How do you feel about cross breeding?

I have seen some very pretty intelligent cross breeds that I like a lot. Why do you think cross breeding is bad or good? designer dogs piss me off too, but i do love cross breeds. i have 3 from a shelter already.

  1. You should never breed mutts on purpose, we already have enough dogs dieing everyday in shelters
  2. It should be Illegal if done on purpose, fancy names slapped on puppies and sold for the price of Purebreds. There is no difference between "Designer" dogs and fraud.
  3. I honestly like Mutts better then Pure breeds. One they are smarter, they are also healthier and do live longer. They are also more immune to genetic diseases that a pure bred dog would catch.
  4. I am against it entirely, I too have owned some wonderful mutts, but the only people that cross breeds are puppy millers and BYB's that want to make some quick money off of producing puppies, especially these new "designer dogs". Makes me SICK. With these dogs you have no idea what hereditary problems they may have, and they can sometimes even have more health concerns and such more than purebred dogs!
  5. Mutts are great dogs, and should be encouraged. I don't mean these new designer breeds (which I think are rather silly), I mean just plain good red-blooded mongrels.
  6. Really? You have huh? Have you seen smart hillbillies too?
  7. I'll at least thank you for not saying hybrid. I might have blown a pupil if I have to read that one more time. I think it has produced many great dogs for centuries. Shelters are full of cute intelligent cross breeds. Go find one there. They are dying to get out.
  8. if it wasn't for cross breeding my two dogs (including a pedigree) wouldn't exist
  9. i love cross BREEDS but not cross BREEDING
  10. The only only only only way I can justify it is in the creation or refining of a breed. Anything else is pure irresponsibility. If you found a mutt that you like, it's because one of the purebred parents was a good dog. Remember, the whole is never more than the sum of its parts.. Anja - I'm wondering if you can show me the research that says that mutts are healthier. See, when I majored in evolutionary biology, we were taught the opposite. Have things changed? Has basic biology changed?
  11. Cross breeding ruins the standards of the original breed. Usually cross breeders are backyard breeders who haven't a clue about showing dogs and don't care that their dogs may end up in a shelter someday. They are selfishly increasing the dog population, and we have an explosion of dogs in our country today. Many or most of them are euthanized because there aren't enough homes for them. If you find a mutt to adopt, then great. Get it spayed or neutered, but don't add to the population. With a mutt, you also don't know what characteristics to expect, i.e., German Shepards are great guard dogs and they're smart. Pitbulls are loving dogs, chihuahuas yap, toy poodles are great lap dogs, shiba inus are stubborn, greyhounds and whippets are bred to run, labs are sweet and gentle, water dogs love the water, etc.
  12. Mutts are ***ONLY*** made on purpose by CROOKS! >OR< By accident by negligent lazy morons! Period...no excuses ,no reprieve.
  13. There are enough purebred dog breeds to satisfy everyone's needs. It is wrong to purposely breed 2 different breeds together, then the people who do ask twice as much for the mutts as they would ask for a purebred. It is just a ploy to stick cutesy names on mutts and get rich doing so.
  14. cross breeding...mutts. mixes. designer dogs. it's all the same thing. there are thousands dying in the shelter every year. back yard breeders are morons who are only contributing to the deaths of innocent animals. any intelligent human being would never allow two dogs of different breeds or mixed breeds to procreate. the only ones that should be breeding are registered show dogs with owners who have years and years of experience with the breed standard and understand that they'll be losing money by breeding their dogs.
  15. It has nothing to do with intelligence but health issues as as soon as you cross breed the worst genes are passed on and though you may think y ou are getting a particular cross or designer dog you have no idea whether there are other dogs in that mutt. Why pay good monet to money hungry puppy miller as you get no inoculations, health certificates,a comeback and you have an expensive mutt.if you want a cross b red go to the shelter there are plenty there.registered breeders only breed with their best stock which are usually champions and also give you all you need re health guarantees, inoculation and a comeback if it does not work out.it s up to you.All dogs are Intelligent to a degree but some more than others it is the training and care that you give the dog that is important
  16. I think mutts are healthier than pure bred dogs. Pure bred dogs always tend to get problems that go with the type of breed they are. Like dalmations tend to be deaf and labs get hip displacement.
  17. That would indicate to me that you don't have any knowledge of genetics or the problems associated with breeding healthy dogs. By taking two breeds and mixing them together, you are essentially doing the same thing as getting close to winning a game, and then mixing in rules and playing pieces from another. It sets the process back beyond what one can account for, and bad things happen to the offspring. That's not a responsible thing for any higher life form in control of another to do.
  18. I am against cross BREEDING but I am not against cross bred dogs.
  19. I don't agree with intentionally creating mutts. But it is not the dogs fault. You can't blame them. They didn't ask for that. Of course I love all dogs purebred and mixed.
  20. I wouldnt do it. There are alot of dogs and puppies, even purebreed dogs that are at shelters looking for good homes. Id leave it alone. If you want a dog, check rescue groups and shelters.
  21. it makes me pretty anger and i honestly think it should be outlawed---- et me correct that statement * i think people should be outlawed from cross breeding not that the mutts should be put down or anything just that people shouldnt be allowed to mix breeds and cause adoption centers as well as the roads to be overcrowed with homeless dogs * i think only the people with proper knowledge and expirience with dogs should be allowed to breed and only pure breeds if we keep producing mutts our world will lose all the beautiful breeds tht created these dogs!
  22. I like cross breads but I would much rather have a pure bread. Don't breed dogs unless you know the home the dog is going to. A lot of dogs are dieing because of over breeding. SAVE THE DOGS!!!!!
  23. its just wrong you are messing up the lifes of some dogs so they look NO THATS completly wrong it should be stopped
  24. dont agree withe whole designer dog thing but i have a cross bred dog, but it was cause the owner had 2 dif breed dogs and they had puppies, hate puppy mills 2
  25. Ok genetic diseases aren't caught as said by someone. They are just that acquired from the genes. All dogs have genes. And by mixing dogs you don't necessarily bring out all the bad genes either as another stated.Where are these people getting their information? If two healthy dogs are bred you have just as good a chance of having healthy pups whether the parents are the same breed or different breeds. And like it or not there are people who prefer a cross breed to a purebred and they will pay for one of the mix they want.An unpopular belief but every one has that choice. As long as the animal is represented honestly that is what counts.
  26. If they are from a shelter they are called MUTTS. Someone let their lab/border collie mix breed with a pit mix because they did not get one or the other spayed/neutered. This is not a cross because there is more than 2 breeds in this equation. That is what makes them a mutt. Also when breeding a poodle with another well bred breed. You are getting the best of both worlds. Example a Bichpoo. Both wonderful smart and loving breeds. Both Do not shed most Mutts do. If they are bred on purpose they are crosses or designer dogs. There is nothing wrong with breeding 2 purebred dogs together. Don't you know that is how they came up with 100's of Breeds that are AKC now.
  27. Most cross bred dogs have come into being as a result of 1 of 2 reasons. No.1, the most common, people not responsibly preventing their dog from breeding and thereby contributing to the overpopulation of the dog world - usually "accidentally". No. 2 - becoming more and more common - people purposely breeding their dog with a different breed to create a designer dog which they try to pass off as a breed, thereby conning the naive and uninformed public. Neither of these reasons are good enough to be bringing more dogs into a world where there just aren't enough good "forever" homes. In addition, I agree that there are some terrific crossbred dogs around - smart, personable and easy on the eye. At the same time there are alot of mis-shapen crossbred dogs around which just look wrong - overly long for their height, knobly legs, cow hocks, strange ear sets, etc. I feel sorry for these dogs with their poor construction as it has adverse affects on their quality of life.
