Should I neuter my Maine Coon cats...?
@_@" Well, first off I have two male maine coon cats, and they're about a year old already. We were going to have them neutered but we kind of forgot about it.. They're supposed to be peeing all over the place if they don't get neutered right? Apparently the two of our cats are fine and they don't seem to spray ... Does anyone know if they would pick up the bad habits later in their life if we don't neuter them, or would they stay 'normal'? Do all male cats start spraying if you don't cut their balls off..? x_x ..

- Usually male cats start spraying around 6 months but it could happen latter. I suggest getting them neutered ASAP. Not because of the spraying, but to get them out of there torture. They will always be looking for girls and try to escape. Hope that helped.
- Some cats may never spray, others may pick up the habit any time. It's really a gamble so I would recommend still getting them neutered. This may also help prevent future aggression between them.
- Cats can spray even if they are neutered, usually if they feel their territory is crowded. And yes, they can pick it up later in life. My male cat did not spray for many years, but now he won't stop. It is sad because he is basically exiled from the house and he is a very unhappy animal. You should definately neuter them though. On average, fixed pets live longer, more peaceful lives than untouched animals.
- Yes, it's possible that they could begin to spray at any age. By having them neutered, you'll eliminate the possibility of them spraying and will also eliminate the chances of them acquiring testicular cancer.
- Spraying is marking of territory if they feel they have no need to mark they won't But someday if they smell a strange cat they will mark. I would get them neutered to avoid the possibility of them getting out someday and getting hurt trying to get them self a girl.
- Yes, I am pretty sure your male cats will start spraying eventually. And honestly, probably sooner than later. I think you have been lucky but beware 1 year is when they start to spray. Females go into heat at 6 months but males don't start spraying until 1 year. Unless you know his exact birthday, I would watch for the signs and get them to a vet ASAP. Neutering also has health benefits and can prevent many cancers and ailments for your pet. It is the better thing to do.
- "Forgot" about it? Yes - by all means get them neutered. Not only will this prevent them from dashing outdoors to mate but it will prevent testicular cancer later in life. Unaltered male cats don't pee all over the place - they SPRAY. Meaning they'll spray onto your walls, your electronics, your furniture, your rugs, your bed - EVERYTHING. Do you have papers for these cats? I find it hard to believe these are pedigree Maine Coons. Reputable breeders do not sell unaltered cats unless they're part of their breeding program.
- I had two male Maine coons, they were indoor/outdoor cats, and never had any problem with them...I never got them neutered, I thought they "did it" outdoors
- They could definitely pick up those habits later on. Not only that but they can start to become more aggressive because of the hormone changes. You really need to get them neutered soon before they start spraying, becoming mean, and trying to run away! And yes, they will try to run away so they can find a lovely female to mate with. I work in a vet clinic and it's very sad to see the amount of kittens out there that have to get put down because no one can find a home for them. There's just way too many cats in the world!
