Why do people get...?

animals and then don't take care of them or abuse them? It's so annoying and frustrating, it's like, if you know you don't have enough money, time, or care then why get a pet? One time there was a box left outside my gate. I went outside only to have something come barking, running up to me. Someone had dropped off a dog that just had babies and I guess she was protecting her babies. Very cute, but where I live I can't keep pets. I also stay across the street from a church, and our place and the church is right behind a creek. Anyway, i kept seeing something in the tall grass by the church next to the creek but i didn't want to see what it was because there are foxes and coyotes. But my curiosity got the best and i went to check it out. And there were 6 little labrador puppies. That someone again had abandoned. And I do think it was fate because the same day I took the puppies, the church had big tractors mowing the grass in the very area where the puppies were. Who could do that?? Why not just give the puppies up to a shelter. Someone even left a little kitten by itself by my house. Why do people get pets and not take care of them? How about just not getting them in the first place? If I could have kept all of the animals or at least some i would have. It's just sad that people do this.

  1. For children, the "new" wears off of pets and they get tired of caring for the animal and forget about them. Sometimes, kids get pets before going off to college. Those pets are left with their parents. Then the pets are left for, sometimes irresponsible, parents to take care of. Usually, the parents don't want to deal with it. I live in the country and have had my share of people dropping off animals. At my house, they get shot. Not out of cruelty, but because we raise high-dollar livestock and cannot afford the risk of keeping unknown animals around. In addition, it costs upwards to sixty dollars to leave animals at a shelter. I've tried to do it, bullets prove to be cheaper.
  2. Be thankful you don't work at a large corporate petstore. I see stuff everyday that would break your heart. As for people, I think most of it is a lack of education. Many people seem to impulse buy and end up taking care of an animal they don't know how to. I did research for six months on my rabbit before I got him. During Easter in the store I couldn't tell you how many people bought bunnies and had no idea what to do with them. However, there are wonderful people in the world who are trying to save animals lives. One of our charities at work adopted 18 puppies out of another shelter who were going to put them to sleep that week. By day four of having those puppies, they were all adopted.
