Does anyone have any info on endangered animals being rescued and held captive in zoos?

Please, it's for my English essay. Don't list the information yourself, but give me a link to an informationally valid site that you can find. Any information or statistics on zoos would be amazing, and anything about endangered species being rescued is wanted too. Thanks. Thankyou Jas B, your answer was helpful!

  1. Huh? Your question is skewered. Endangered animals that were rescued due to serious injuries or abandoned as babies end up in zoos because once they are taken care of by humans (first aid, fed, medicated, etc.) they cannot be returned to the wild. When babies grow up, they do not have the skills to fend for themselves in the wild. Severely injured animals that recover cannot be returned to the wild because they are crippled. The world has cracked down on endangered animals being trapped/caught in the wild and sold to zoos. Maybe you are referring to some sick individuals that will pay to have endangered species caught and have a private zoo. Those are under everyone's radar unless they are caught and exposed.
  2. Gerald Durrel the naturalist and writer set up Jersey Zoo specifically to help endangered species, see link.
  3. The other answerer is correct, your question does have some holes in it. Animals are not usually taken out of the wild to be placed into zoos. They are born there or were obtained from other zoos. YEARS ago animals were taken out of of the wild, but that has not been practiced recently. Yes, there are zoos that have endangered species breeding programs where they are raised in zoos and are raised in a why so that they are not acclimated to humans and can be released into the wild. Look here for zoos that help endangered species. http://cres.sandiegozoo.org/
  4. There are many endangered species being kept in zoos. By being rescued I assume you mean the species has been 'saved' by being held captive. The immediate one which springs to mind is the Prsewalski Wild Horse which is only captive. It cannot be released into its natural environment in the wilds of Mongolia as it would quickly hybridise with feral horses. Read Why Zoos? http://hubpages.com/_13rz0ikcd0g1v/hub/Why-Zoos and Breeding Programmes http://hubpages.com/_13rz0ikcd0g1v/hub/Zoo-Breeding-Programmes Both these will help you
  5. The Bronx Zoo (opened 1899) here in NY single handedly saved the American Bison from Extinction, with the help from Hornaday in 1907 . Today they are fighting to save 40 endangered species.
