What are extinct animals or plants of the Amazon Tropical Rain Forest?

Public Comments

  1. The reality is that while we can infer from what is happening to the Amazon rain forest that X number of species are likely going extinct over Y period of time, nobody really knows for sure. For one thing, the Amazon is large and not all that well known. But, while it is easy to prove that an animal is not extinct by simply showing a living example, it is very, very difficult to prove that an animal is in fact extinct. I recall a recent discovery in a fisherman's net of a fish that had been thought to be extinct for 100,000 years or some such. One turns up in a net, and voila: it's not extinct after all. On the other hand, that may have been the last living specimen of that species. Who can say for sure?
