  1. Yes I agree. They also tend to have less "common breed" health issues.
  2. What a mix!! And yes i love mutts! They just seem to get the best qualitys of the 2 breeds there mixed with. My dog is a german shorthaired pointer, greyhounde, weimeraner mix. =]
  3. yeah, i prefer mongrels
  4. I love my mutt. That being said, I don't promote mutts as being the best!! I recommend them to people bc the shelters are full of them. Once they aren't (which I hope will happen one day), I hope there is NO market for them.
  5. No, I don't reckon they're better. All are dogs and both a purebred or mixed breed can be "the greatest dog you ever owned" or also "the worst dog you ever owned." Looks are a personal preference. Personally, I think purebreds are, as a rule, much more beautiful. Occasionally I see a mixed breed that is drop-dead gorgeous, but for my tastes, more purebreds are beautiful than mixed breeds. I have not found that mixed breeds have fewer health problems, and I have had both mutts and purebreds. In fact, a well-bred purebred has fewer health problems than the mixed breeds I've owned. And most mutts come from purebreds at some point, so they have all of the same unhealthy genes as purebreds. Definitely they're not more loving than purebreds. What I think you may be saying, however, is that rescued dogs are often more loving and even "grateful" than dogs you get as puppies. I could certainly believe this.
  6. I think that dogs are products of their environments. I have a Staffie and then I have a red nose/Lab mix, they're both great, and I love them dearly...but I've known mixed dogs who were horribly behaved, biters, etc. It all depends on training and how you raise them...a lot like kids.. I also check breed temperament tests before I adopt any dog.
  7. i agree. i find that the personalities are far better and the dieases and lines of genetic and illneses are far better, However i do like the appearance of many pure pedigrees.
  8. My feelings about all dogs is if it gives you what you want, you will love it. No matter what contributed its DNA.
  9. Mixed breed dogs can be terrific However the reason that breeds were developed in the first place is so that people could have some real understanding of what a breeding would produce. There is a certain consistency in basic look, tendencies toward talent in various skills, and basic temperament types. It is a myth that mixed breeds are healthier than pure breed dogs - (research has been done at a major veterinary school on this) I'm glad you love your mixed breed. Right now I have a pure breed dog and think the world of her.
  10. I use pointer lab X'es for hunting, they seem to be better for pheasants around here. Better nose than a pure lab, calmer than a pointer. They aren't prone to hip displacia like a pure lab. I can always get one from the pound. It seems to be a common accident.
  11. I think the BEST dog is a well mannered, trained, loved, healthy, and happy one! Come on when you look at that cute, excited face when it's time to go for a car ride, do you really think about their breed? What their heritage is, shouldn't matter any longer in the 21st century.
  12. I am glad you love your dogs, and that you love mutts. But no I dont agree with you. In MY opinion, they have just as many problems and issues as a purebred dog. This concept that they are cross bred so they are better geneticly is BS. If you have a Female with hipdysplasia and a male with eye problems your pups could have eye problems and hip dysplasia. Just because the puppies are mutts doesnt mean that they will geneticly be better than the parents. They can be loving also. I agree, but I also know quiet a bit of mix bred dogs that are mean or would be concidered the junk yard dog cause of the temper. They are fine with the owner or his family but that is it. The look, some are ok, some are so fuddly that I shudder. a beagle doberman cross is not cute, it is sad. So I dont agree. Mutts can be cute, but unreliable, not dependable and sometimes not cute, and mean. I love my purebreds, I know what I am getting, I know who the parents are and what they will look like when they grow up. I love purebred dogs.
  13. yeah people who don't like them are just snobs
  14. I love cross breeds, some look really pretty, especially collie crosses.
  15. as much as i love my mutts, i have had quite a few with every health issue that was prominent in the breeds they were crossed with. i dont care if it is a mutt or pure bred training is the key to "the best dog i have ever owned". the best dog i have ever owned and was a rotti. he was excpetionally well trained doing voice, hand and germarn commands and had no health issues until he was old. the mutts i have now have health issues and although they are beutiful and loving to me, my family actually sent in a picture of one of them to the ugliest dog contest.
  16. There are good and bad individuals in all breeds and mixes. Cross breeds are generally cheaper, not necessarily better.
  17. as long as the mating was accidental and not a BYB doing it on purpose
  18. No. The beauty of breeds is that you are pretty sure what you are getting. The beauty of mongrels is that they rarely have major health issues and live to a ripe old age. Cross breeds have neither of these things. In fact they could end up with multiple geneitic illnessess... and you never know how they'll end up personality-wise. I have also seen people breeding large breed dogs to small breed bitches and its cruel and unnecessary.
  19. Hi, You are SO right. They are healthier, longer lived and much more intelligent. I wouldn't have anything else!
  20. i agree with you, my dog is a terrier of indeterminate parentage and is the cleverest, most loving, non neurotic friendly little dog i have ever known. i have had three pedigree dogs and all were neurotic and a nightmare to manage. ah, i see i have misunderstood the 'crossbreed' thing. well anyway, my little dog is a 57 varieties kind of dog, not a crossbreed. oops.
  21. I love my mutts
  22. I dont particularly regard crosses to be 'the best', but i think registored breeds are either... Crossing breeds puts strength into the dog, as pure breds can have numerous health problems. also, cross-breds are typically cheaper than kennel Club registereds, although this doesnt matter if s/he is your 'baby'... Actualy, there's been an argument on my site (shown in sources) about a particular cross bred, the Labradoodle... I think labradoodles are great, because they combine the non-shedding poodle coat and the poodle's ace intelligents with the Labrador's trainablity, loveability and overall personality, although poodles alone also make good pets.... Have a look at my site and tell me what you think on the Visitor's bark Back page...
