Cross Breeds

What is everyones problem with cross breed dogs?

After all most dog breeds started from crossing anyhow so what is the big deal? I think if you love your dog it doesn't matter how many different breeds it is. I also beleive that new breeds should be able to be established my cross is a wonderful one, both her parents were pure bred, I know most of her siblings and they are all beautiful natured and good looking dogs. So all you pure breed dog owners take a chill pill or are you all afraid that a cross breed dog is better looking and more well behaved and smarter than yours?

  1. Nobody has a problem with mixed breeds. We have a problem with mixed breeds being deliberately bred when millions are already homeless! If there were a home for every dog then I wouldn't care at all of people wanted to breed mixed breeds, but the fact is that there isn't a home for every dog so why make more?
  2. most dogs in shelters or rescue are mutts... they are disposable... they get lost and no one cares where they are during their lifetime... a reputable breeder will keep track of their dogs for the lifetime of the dog.. the same cannot be said about designer/BYB/mills edit nobody hates mixed breed dogs..they hate the people that go out of their way to breed them
  3. I love cross breed dogs! There is nothing wrong with them, although they can sometimes be a bit unpredictable but so what- all dogs can!
  4. The problem is that people are breeding them with no concern for the temperament or health risks associated with the dog. The pounds are filling up with these "designer" breeds and no one seems to really care that for every pup you buy from one of these breeders a pup will die in the shelter. I have no problem with mutts, I have a beagle basset hound mix, however I do not refer to him as a "bagel" because that is not what he is. What he is is a mutt, a lovable wonderful mutt.
  5. Breeding to make a new breed is not the same as breeding two dogs and calling them a new breed. There are some things currently classified as breeds in development-they are working to make predictable pups with their own breed standard. They readily admit that they are not yet predictable and their offspring could yield any result. However, after more generations and lots of work these will be breeds. Designer dog breeders do not strive to make a new breed. Theyre just trying to make a buck off a dog that is not predictable in its traits and that will not yield predictable offspring. Theyre no different than what you find in a shelter. A true breed or even a breed in development is entirely different.
  6. If you're looking to mix breeds, you better know exactly why you're doing it, and what you're trying to achieve that isn't already available in any of the other hundreds of breeds out there. If you can't define exactly what it is you're trying to do and why, and you're just mixing breeds because they're handy and you can make a buck by selling the pups, then you have NO reason to be breeding. Millions of dogs are killed every year because of the massive overpopulation problem in the US. If you're not willing to be part of the solution, at least stop being part of the damned problem.
  7. Breeds were created witha PURPOSE in mind. The dog was bred to DO something. Mixes, mutts, cross breeds, designer breeds.....whatever you call them now, they are NOT bred for a purpose. They are bred to make $$$ and be called something CUTE.
  8. Hi there, i have to agree with you on this one, i do love my pure breeds you can see below what i have owned and fostered before and what i have now. I find a lot of cross breeds get the characters of both breeds and it really shows, especially (this is only my opinion) when they have Rottie or Mastiff in them. I have nothing against the genuine breeders of purebreds, but absolutely detest the ones that are in it for the money. The only thing i would say against a cross breed is the opportunist breeder is now clicking on to this, coming up with all these silly names to put yet more money in their pockets. However they are extremely delightful and you gotta love um.
  9. I think most would agree that almost everyone on here LOVES all dogs, regardless of breed, and would like to see each and every dog given love and care throughout their lives. The PROBLEM is in the PEOPLE who breed the mutts, purely for profit, with no concern for their health, temperaments, or their futures. Dogs are not the problem. Dog health and overpopulation are the problem. Bad "breeders" (more like dog producers/salespeople) are the biggest problem.
  10. i love mixed dogs! many people dont like them my father had one.. he says he was really obedient
  11. Breeds are a human creation. They really mean nothing. All dogs have Dog DNA. As long as your dog fits your needs, it is wonderful. Crossbreeds by any name are just as wonderful as purebreeds by any name --------------- Loki-- I could harness all my chis together and they couldn't pull a chair across the floor. They weigh less than 50lbs all together. But breeds don't matter. My chihuahuas all have dog DNA just like any mixed, crossed, designer breed. A breed isn't a holy contrivance that can't be touched. Its a dog. As long as it fits the need of its owner, its perfect. I need a lap dog. If you need a sled puller then any big, strong dog that fits your need would work. It's not some holy only one is perfect thing. As long as your dog fits your need, its perfect. And if someone wants a cute little puggleadoo, and if it fits their need, then thats perfect for them. Breeds are simply a human creation. They aren't a diety's relic. Does that help you understand what I mean?
  12. No one has a problem with the mutt. What we do have a problem with is the irresponsible breeding practices that trail behind these cute little so-called designer dogs. What is the purpose of breeding? The purpose of breeding is to improve the breed, not try to create a new one. No good breeder would ever cross breeds. It completely contradicts the reason behind responsible breeding. Have you seen those cute mutts? "Cockapoos", "Shipoos", "Chipoos", "Labradoodles", "Goldendoodles", "Boxadors", "Buggs", "Jackapoos", "Puggles", etc. They can all make wonderful, wonderful dogs. However, slapping a cutsie name on them doesn't make them better, nor does it make them more of a purebred. Why should you pay hundreds upon hundreds for these mutts when you can find them in shelters? I, personally, love all dogs. Big, small, longhaired, shorthaired, fat, skinny, purebred and mutt. I have NO problem with mutts. As a dog lover though, I absolutely hate seeing people going out to buy the latest hip dog just because everyone has it. I hate seeing people go to these "breeders" that intentionally breed mixed breeds when they can go rescue a life at a shelter. I hate seeing people think they're getting their dog from a good breeder when they aren't. I hate seeing people getting these "designer dogs" from a "breeder" when there are thousands of dogs euthanized each year. I guess I just don't understand why you would want to support something like that. Why would you want to support irresponsible breeding practices? How can you stand by and know that thousands of dogs are dying and buy that irresponsibly bred little mutt? Why would you want to do that?
  13. I love my dog. He is a mix from two pure parents and he's incredibly loyal and smart too. Mom is a Golden retriever and Dad is an Australian Shepard and a working cow dog. He looks like a dirty dalmation and I got him neutered so he won't have any accidents like his parents did. The Goldens owner is the daughter of the Shepards owner. She said her retreiver went into heat while she was visiting her parents and the dogs always run together so the litter of puppies was an unplanned surprise.
  14. This argument again? Complete with the lame-ass last line, I see. Highly mature. You almost sounded legitimate, until you blew it there. "most dog breeds started from crossing anyhow so what is the big deal?" True, but they were crossed for a functional reason. "Because it's super cute and can fit in my purse!" isn't a functional reason. "I also beleive that new breeds should be able to be established" Fine, as long as they are created for a legitimate PURPOSE...not to make money, not to clog shelters, but to fulfill a niche that no currently existing breed can fill. I have no problem with mixes. I have a mix, taken from a shelter, sitting at home right now. Most people in this forum don't have a problem with mixes. It's the morons who breed them on purpose for no reason other than "cuteness" or $$$ that we have a problem with. And it's embarrassing to see people actually pay for them when they could adopt one from a shelter. ADD: Ilovetorofl -- "Breeds really mean nothing"...you should know better than to make these generalizations. I'd love to see your Chihuahuas pull a dog sled, or go into a burrow after a badger...seriously -- where do you come up with this crap?
  15. GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CROSS DOG PARENTS, UNITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wouldn't have a purebred dog if handed to me on a gold leash. and by the way, dogs can't read anyway and they can pee on their papers as well as any other papers.
  16. I don't have a problem with mixed breed dogs. I DO have a problem with people purposely breeding mixed breed dogs, while so many are Dying in animal shelters. This thing about creating new breeds, and all breed started as a mix at one point is just stupid. It doesn't make sense. You have to think about this. When creating an entirely New breed, people put a LOT of work into it. They have to have a Job specified for the dog. Like, say a herding dog. They start with a few breeds they know work well. If it isn't quite right, they put a lot of effort into deciding which other breed/breeds to add. And Which dog to choose to add into their blood line. There is a specific purpose for the dog, and they are using different dog breeds in order to get the characteristics they need in order to get a dog who performs the best. When it comes to Designer Breeders, they get a Chihuahua and a Dachshund and make puppies. They call the pups "ChiWeenies" slap a $800 price tag on them, and there good to go. They aren't trying to create a new breed for any specific purpose, they are Trying to creat a Mixed Breed dog. Just because they are called a cute name like a "ChiWeenie" "Puggle" MaltiPoo" That doesn't make them an entirely New breed. It makes them a mixed breed dog. You could have got the same mix from an animal shelter, and Saved a Dog's Life!!
  17. To be perfectly HONEST, I wouldn't have a problem with these breeders IF they were actually trying to develop a new breed. There are specific guidelines set by the AKC for establishing new breeds, but this is not what these people are doing. PLUS: Breed a Poodle with a Pug = mixed breed dogs. You cannot sell them as a new breed because one breeding does NOT make a new breed, they should be sold as (for instance) Poodle/Pug mix. Breeder keeps what they are looking for to establish and breeds again, again selling pups as mixed breed. And this goes on until such a time they have developed the traits and characteristics they wanted to set, and the dogs are breeding true to type. This is a very oversimplified explanation. It takes years to establish a new breed and lots of hard work and considerable knowledge. This is how new breeds are made. There isn't one 'designer' dog breeder out there even attempting to establish a breed. They slap an idiotic sounding 'cutsey' name on mixed breeds and sell them off for about what you'd pay for a real breed from a responsible breeder. It's quite a racket and a lot of the public falls right into it. Suckers are born every minute And I do have a mixed breed. That's what she is, a mixed breed, nothing more and she's wonderful. But I didn't get taken to the bank, I got her from a rescue group...a more sensible approach to getting a mixed breed dog ADDED: Before anyone says the 'hybrid vigor' bull, my mutt has health problems that are going to be life long, requiring meds given 2xs daily and blood tests twice yearly to monitor the meds. So please explain 'hybrid vigor' to me and my dog because it sounds like bunk to me ADDED II: NOBODY is attacking mixed breed dogs! HELLO are you LISTENING? The logic and intelligence behind buying one from one of these breeders is in question though. Save your money, save a life, adopt from shelters and rescues. Those dogs deserve homes and are every bit as good as the dog you paid out the wahzoo for. Why don't YOU chill?
  18. A dog is a dog! Simple as that whether it's pure bred or not and NO dog is "disposable". Who ever wrote that really needs to get their prue bred nose outta the air before a good rain comes and drowns them. I love all dogs I've had both pure and mixed breed dogs and actually the mixed breeds have been a great deal more intelligent. But who are we to say what is pure bred or not? They are all the same species. But instead of ranting I agree with you a cross-bred dog is a perfectly good dog. OH AND BEFORE I GET ANNOYING EMAILS ABOUT DOGS IN SHELTERS I HAVE WORKED THERE AND WOULD TAKE THEM ALL HOME IF I COULD!!! ADD: I am chilled...But I am entitled to my opinion as are you and I was giving my views to the Asker not other indivivuals on here, who often feel the need to harass others who happen to disagree with their views. I have gotten emails from people who didn't like what I wrote or disagreed in some way with it and tried to press their views, that's what the last part is about.
  19. Trust me when I say I am not worried that your MUTT is better than any of my purebred dogs. As for temperment, I can guaruntee the temperment of my dogs, and if I have puppies guaruntee that also. I can also guaruntee the look of my dogs... A cross, you can not guaruntee any of that. Even if you see the mom and dad their is no guaruntee, in look or temperment. Some crosses dont mix well at all. Ever seen a doberman beagle "cross". It is not pretty. How about a Mastiff, and a cocker spaniel? NOT GOOD. esp when the mom is the smaller breed. Asking why we have a problem... There are mistakes or "accidents" that do happen and I say Accident very loosely as I dont believe in every "Accident" that happens. Mutts are made and yeah make wonderful pets. They are not sold as Cross bred anything or Hybrids, or designer bred dogs, They are sold at the most $50-$150. the cost of having them and vet care. Those really should not of happened but oh well Foo Foo got pregnant by the Fi Fi, and we now have cocker and poodles puppies. The issue Responsible breeders have is with those saying that the mix bred dog is better, cause they just paid what $1000. for a dog that is not guarunteed? well You have a MUTT, and if you want to come over I can show you what a pure bred dog looks and acts like. I am sure you think yours is well behaved and smarter, and I am happy for you... But dont judge your dog against others cause allot of us would put your poor pooch to shame when it comes to TRAINING and BREEDING. Most breeders breed for intellegence, look (standards), temperment and trainablity. If we had a female that was not any of these then we would not breed and if the male was not any of these then we would not breed to him. BYB is where you got your MUTT from breed cause they have one dog and another dog jumped the fence or they thought the two dogs would make cute puppies or the male and female were available. That is why we have an issue with the BREEDERS of MUTTS. Oh and it has nothing to do with $$$ as a responsible breeder you are lucky if you break even... a month I spend $2000. to show one dog.. now I had 3 in the ring at one time... adds up then the testing and vet care, grooming... even the dobies, need a handler and groomer... so dont tell responsible breeders about how intellegent you think your dog is... I dont think he can compare to an agility dog in an agility or obedience show... We work very hard to train our dogs. (take a champion and put it with a champion and you will get champion lines of the same breed) Put a rottie with a another breed and you get a MUTT. And yes this really burned me up.... I am tired of the stop picking on my MUTT. If you dont like it dont ask you will only get the truth...
  20. Well it is foolish for someone to spend 250.00 on a dog that isnt even papered. Taking one particular breed and crossing with another to make money is even more foolish. You cant just take two different breeds and thoughtlessly make puppies. That is disgusting! You dont know what the genetic makeup will be of two breeds such as a beagle and a pug. Just cause its cute, doesnt mean its smart! Secondly I have two bure bred AKC registered boxers, AND an ADBA registered Pit bull. I have had mixed breed dogs before and they have made great pets. I even had a lab rot mix and he was gorgeous that I didnt pay a penny for. So having someone tell you that you are foolish doesnt necessarily mean that they are intimidated that your dog looks better! I think that you are the one that needs to take the chill bottle.
  21. I have to ask, how many different ways are you going to ask this question? It is twice now. Do you think the answers will be different?
