Maine Coon Cats - Are Maine Coons Well Behaved Cats or Nasty Tempered Pets?

I was just gifted a Maine coon cat and am trying to learn everything possible about how to train, maintain and live with this breed of cats.

  1. Mine was one of my best pets ever. He was HUGE, over 20lbs. Very playful, affectionate.
  2. Every Maine Coon I have ever had (more than 25 years) has been loving, sweet, very gentle and they love children. This is a lovely cat and you are so fortunate to have one. Here's a great book for learning all about Maine Coons: http://www.amazon.com/That-Yankee-Cat-Maine-Coon/dp/088448243X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1221575634&sr=8-3 Good Luck!
  3. The Maine Coon cats I have met have been wonderful cats, relaxed, loving and very beautiful too. Like all long haired breeds you will need to groom your cat pretty much daily to keep it's coat in top condition, also consider getting it a food that it designed to help cats deal with hairballs as well as find a hairball remedy that it likes. Other than that read up on the breed and have lots of fun getting to know your new cat! :)
  4. Maine Coon Cats are also known as 'gentle giants' because of their large cat sizes and a certain resemblance to the Norwegian Forest Cat. Maine Coons themselves are rather friendly, preferring to watch their owners in activity and sitting or laying close by (my grandmother had a few of these loving creatures for over 30 years).
  5. MC's are generally friendly and sweet. A cat's personality is greatly affected by it's treatment and environment. You can't base personality on breed alone. Since MC's often grow to be very large cats, you'll need to scale up the size of things it needs. Bigger litter box, bigger toys, bigger, sturdier cat tree. I suggest getting a good pet insurance plan. Make sure to groom it regularly to keep matting, shedding, and hairballs under control.
  6. I have a Maine Coon cross. She is extremely loving and sweet, and very timid as well. She hides from other cats/people. She's a one person cat, that's for sure.
  7. I have always wanted one but never had the opportunity since all of my babies come by way of unplanned rescue. But what great fortune for you!! They are known as the GENTLE GIANTS congratulations. :)
  8. I have a 12 yr old Maine Coon. He has been my best friend his whole life and is the sweetest most devoted little guy I have ever known. The most imortant thing I can think of to warn you about is their potential for hairball trouble. Get yours used to being brushed daily ASAP. Mine has always hated being brushed from a very young age and I hate to have to restrain him while I do it but he has had so much trouble with hairballs over the years. I keep him on a hairball dry AND wet food formula but still have to give him hairball remedy twice a week as well as hairballs treats. Even with all this he still coughs one up about 3x a month. Much better than the once weekly before I started this regimen but still distressing to watch him go through it. Other than that he has been a delight and never been sick a day in his life. Enjoy your gift. :D
