Cross Breeds

Why are people so overly sensitive and go on the attack when someone asks a question about a cross breed dog?

Yahoo Answers is a place where people can use their wisdom to answer a question. Instead often times members attack other members for asking a question, especially about cross-breeds or toy dogs. I haven't been very active on here in asking questions and giving answers and always try to be sensitive to others but from reading many answers it seems certain users are always on the attack, I had to report several answers just reading the "dog" section. It's making it difficult to learn anything on here. And dare I say it? I have a Shih-poo.

  1. I don't think YA attacks people that have any benign question about cross breeds. Its when questions promote or condone the breeding of crossbreeds where people get upset. The reason is that people who do it don't health or temperament test their animals and the majority end up in shelters doomed to die. Pretty good reasons, I think, to give someone a hard time for promoting irresponsible dog ownership.
  2. Most of the people that "attack" people asking about mixed breed designer dogs know about the over population problem happening world-wide. They know that millions of dogs get put down each year, and backyard breeding and puppy mills are a big contributor of that. There is TONS of mutts out in the shelters and humane societies. Why bring more into the world, when how many others are looking for good homes too?
  3. Many people, myself included, have issues not with these designer breeds themselves, but the people who make them (which are always back yard breeders and puppy mills as no reputable breeder will breed mixes on purpose). We have a horrible dog over population issue, thousands of dogs are killed in shelters, and then people have the nerve to purposely breed mixed breeds, give them a fancy name, and then cheat people by over pricing them? I also personally can not stand the stupidity of many of the names. I'm sorry you have a Shih Tuz x Poodle cross, there's no such breed as a "Shih-poo" And don't even get me started on these people who breed runt to runt trying to make "teacup" sized dogs. Add: I would also like to add, before someone brings it up, there is no such thing as "hybrid vigor" in mixed breed dogs either: http://www.westwinddogtraining.com/hybridvigor.pdf http://www.poodleclubcanada.com/goldendoodles.html Add: Hey look the thumbs down fairies showed up! I knew they would ^_^ Add: Usignola- You seem to be attacking purebred dog owners. No one here ever said purebreds are more healthy, but at least reputable breeders are trying to breed out the problems. Back yard breeders and puppy millers just don't care. I also know when I'm getting a purebred dog the dog will have set characteristics, when you have a mixed breed you just don't have a clue. Not to mention the fact it’s generally dogs that are not of breeding quality that get bred to make these designer dogs because the people breeding them are just out for a quick buck. If you want a designer dog head out to your local shelter, I promise you there are tons of them there. At least then your not supporting back yard breeders or puppy mill owners either. I swear I get more insults on here for owning a purebred than I've seen anyone get for having a mixed breed.
  4. Well, the problem is folks calling a mixed breed dog something like Shih-Poo...you dont have a Shih-Poo, because there is NO such thing. What you have is a Shih Tzu/Poodle mix. By giving the dog a name like Shih-Poo, you are implying that is a breed unto itself, which it is not. It is a mix, if there is nothing wrong with owning a mix..why not just call the pup that? And I have found that folks in the dog section are the worst folks on YA as far as the "attacking" others and trolls.....this section and sometimes over in religion, folks just get nasty and stupid. I think its worse now, cuz its summer and schools are letting out. Last day here was Wednesday, bunch of already bored kids hanging out.....never a good thing. :-)
  5. If you were more active on the site you would know why we get mad. The questions some of us read seem unreal. Because this is the DOGS section, we are all DOG lovers. People who say that they are buying a "toy" breed from this well known breeder are delusional. Toy breeds are just the runts of the litter and breeders sell them four thousands of dollars. On this site, we are trying to RAISE AWARENESS or puppy mills and how many dogs are being killed in shelters world wide. So if you are going to defend those who ask stupid questions and tell US that we make it difficult, find another site because we are nothing BUT HELPFUL. Have you looked into the eyes of a dog who is about to be euthanized? Have to walked down the row of a pound looking at the dogs sitting in their own droppings? Probably not because if you did, you would UNDERSTAND why we get so mad! Edit: Rana if you are going to get on my case because I am trying to get people to stop buying toy dogs for thousands of dollars rather than adopt one before it is killed, than you have a serious problem
  6. I don't know why other people get all overly senstive, it may be the fact that people use the made up names of dogs (they are not cross breeds, that would be like a wolf and a dog, if it's any DOG with two breeds, it's just a mixed breed, not a cross) anyway, they may think that people are using these names like brand names, you know "Oh, I have a yorkie-poo and a goldendoodle..." No, you have a yorkie/poodle mix and an golden retriever/poodle mix, when you say the names like that shih-poo and whatnot, you are making it seem like it's own breed, and glamourizing the mixing of different breeds JUST for the fact that people such as yourself (and do not take offense to this) will buy one... It's got nothing bad to say about you, but you bought/adopted one, so there are others who WILL buy one. I don't think it's right to attack people over it, but I think people just get upset that people are still buying basically mutts because a breeder calls it some cute name when there are perfectly good dogs (a lot of the same mixes too) in a pound who need a home. Edit: Jackie...... There is such a thing as a "toy" breed, that's a recognised AKC group, so it's not always a gimmick, if they are using terms like toy schnauzer or whatever (there is such a thing as toy poodles, Standard, miniature and toy are the three sizes), then THAT'S wrong, as is the term teacup, there is absolutely not such thing whatsoever as a teacup anything.
  7. as long as you didn't pay more than an adoption fee for your shih-poo and you don't try to pass it off as a breed (because it is a mutt and thats nothing to be ashamed of), and your little one is spayed/neutered (because none of us will tolerate breeding mutts on purpose), you've got nothing to be worried about. on the subject of reporting, i hope you had legit reasons and not because someone had a difference of opinion. there are penalties for falsely reporting too. your new. don't get power happy.
  8. I work at a dog grooming store and personally, I feel that toy/mini breeds have worse personalities than larger breeds, but that's just me and I don't have anything against people who own or like these breeds. After all, a dog is a LOT less likely to be well-behaved while they are being groomed than they are at home, right? (: I've also heard that mixed breeds are less likely to have genetic health problems due to inbreeding than purebreds, so I don't know why people have such a problem with mixed breeds. I understand they are not accepted into AKC or breed club shows, but if someone is just having a dog as a pet, why does it matter what breed they are classified as? Shih-poos are very cute, a friend of mine has 2 and I think they are a lot better behaved than a regular shihtzu is. In response to other people saying by calling it a "shih-poo" you are implying that you think it's a breed, MOST people know when you say "shih-poo" you mean a Shihtzu-poodle mix, so I don't see what the problem with calling it a "shih-poo" is. it's an abbreviation, and we use abbreviations like this ALL THE TIME at my work--labradoodle, goldendoodle, puggle, shih-poo. It's just a shorter way of saying the mix that a certain dog is.
  9. A better question would be.. why does this question get asked daily? I am not anti-mixed breeds.. I own a Doxie/Pit Bull cross and recommend mixed breeds/mutts to people a lot more then pure breeds. I think they can be wonderful pets. My problem is with the *designer breeders*, unethical, unresponsible people that breed mixed breeds/mutts, slap on a cutesy name, and sell them for an arm and leg to take advantage of a trend. Especially when there are MANY, MANY mixed breeds/mutts in pounds and rescue looking for homes and also being put to sleep for lack of homes.
  10. I do not want to offend anyone by saying any of the following. First of all, I agree with you. I have nothing against people who have cross bred dogs. But I show purebred dogs and I hate to see good purebred dogs have mixed puppies because often times, the breeder didn't breed responsibly and cant give dogs homes and they then end up in shelters. But that is ONLY when people breed irresponsibly. I also believe we have enough dog breeds in the world and we don't really need many more. We only have 300+ dog breeds. I also do not want to see (in the future) many of those mixes being allowed in the show ring and being registered breeds none the less. This would just ruin the worlds show rings and sacred pristine purebred dogs. BUT I never attack someone for having the cross breed dogs or questions. I don't exactly like it but I don't attack them or anything. And if I do say anything I say it in a nice way.
  11. I totally understand where you're coming from, we have always had "mixed breeds" which we got from the pound & we always got neutered. There is the problem, if you breed mixed breeds, some people get terribly excited. Even worse on the "Cats" area on this site, we have cats (not ours) who have decided to live in our shed & our neighbour's sheds, we all feed them, but they are too wild to put in a car(gawd, we would all be killed) to be neutered. I was asked on this site if they had their shots, here in Ireland there are no shots for cats, obviously there are things that cats can get there, but they're not over here. I have neutered my mongrel dog, but I have no control over these (very wild) cats, but I asked a Q on the cat site & I was insulted completely. Anyone who adopts a crossbreed dog is an angel in my book & if she has pups & you have homes for them - fair play!!! I hate the stuck-up Croffts type "I have a throughbred" types anyway, I have a rescue dog (mixed breed), who is the smartest dog you could meet, he's is the only dog I ever met (I'm 46 years old) that looks at where you point & not at your finger, try it!!! He's lying on my feet at the moment & we love each other so much. I don't need papers, just love. P.S. I didn't realise that we were talking about a "forced" mixed breed, I don't have any time for "forced" mixed breeds, but I have loads of time for anyone who takes a dog in & loves it to bits, I have loads of time for dog lovers, no matter what kind of dog you love. If ruthless people create these mixed breeds, we can't be snobby about it, there are puppys out there who need our love & there will allways be unscrupulous, underhanded folk, wherever. Just look after the pups without being snobby.
  12. It looks like the people who have answered your question so far have definitely proved your point! Sheesh! First of all, pure-bred dogs bred by so-called professional breeders have *plenty* of problems, so it's silly to insist that just because a dog comes from a professional breeder, that dog will be free from health problems or genetic defects. Many "professional" dog breeders are hardly experts in the science of genetics, which, by the way, is an imprecise practice that frequently returns unpredictable results and mutations. Yes, there are lots of dogs in shelters, but it is no crime to want a dog that has the typical features of, say, a Pomeranian and a Maltese: therefore you get a Malti-Pom. Or, as you have done, you get a Shih-Poo. I did not receive the impression that you think your dog is an AKC recognized breed, and I'll bet your dog is adorable and sweet, and a great companion. Also, one of the reasons thousands of mixed-breed dogs languish in shelters while, on the other hand, shelters can often sell pure bred dogs for hundreds or even thousands of dollars, is because of people's insistence that pure-bred dogs are somehow better than mixed-breed dogs. They're not! I can also understand, sad as this is, why someone might not choose to get a dog from a pound. You just can't know the background they've had -- abuse, health problems, potty training issues, etc. -- and so would rather buy a mixed-breed puppy -- usually at a MUCH lower price than a pure-bred one -- than get a dog from a pound. Also, even if you get a mixed-breed dog you will have an idea of its future size and what some of its features might be if you know the parents' breeds and weights. It's also fun to see how mixed-breed dogs turn out: will the puppy end up with curly fur, wavy fur, or straight fur? Will he look more like a poodle or a Shi-tzu in the face, or like both? What cool color(s) will puppy become? Etc. I'm sorry people are so negative about this topic on Yahoo Answers; you should be able to ask questions about mixed-breed dogs without being attacked, derided, chided, etc. As long as you love and take good care of your dog, it's your concern, and not anyone else's!
  13. Somebody attack you for your shihpoo? Most people on here dont have a problem with your dog. It is a mix and not a designer dog as there really is no such thing. People put that name on the breed to sell them for more money. The problem is that there are so many shihpoos in the shelters and around now cause of the over breeding (crossbreeds) that the shelters are full. I find shihpoos on the street just thrown out. YEAH. I dont attack other members for owning one just wheree they got it from. A greeder for lots of $$$. or a shelter YEAH! I dont have a problem with the dogs just the breeders. Keep reporting and people wont trust you.... everyone has an opinion and they are allowed it. If they dont like mix bred dogs then so be it. If its is insulting or rude then fine otherwise dont cause problems on here cause you dont like the answer or the truth about your dog. MOST OF MY FAMILY OWNS MUTTS.
  14. Because people (asking the questions) are often times ignorant and cruel to animals. They are insensative and inhuman... or just plain stupid. Not to be rude here... just giving you my honest opinion and answer. I'm not completely educated on the subject of cross breeding, but from what I do know, it is not healthy for the animals. People are often cross breeding for their own benefit whether it be to make money by selling the dogs (which have not been bred properly) or to have a cool looking dog. Which is highly unethical. "Toy" dogs will not live a long healthy life. A lot of these mixed breeds and toy dogs come from backyard breeders. I suggest you do your research on back yard breeders and puppy mills before reporting the people who get upset with this cruelty toward animals. An ethical breeder will breed purebreds for the love of dogs. Not for the love of money. That's the difference.
  15. I know!! I have a AKC registered purebred but I think mixed-pups are the cutest things!
  16. I know what you mean, in my opinion people shouldnt ASSUME. And people need to UNDERSTAND, ITS JUST A DAMN QUESTION. If you dont like the question simply....DONT ANSWER TO IT!!
