Are Boxer Dogs Any Good at Guarding at all When the owner is out?

I am asking because many people say they are rubbish at guarding their home, while other people say they are good guard dogs. Are they any good at all to guard the home they live in? I personally don't mind if they are just a watch dog. It will be a pet and if an intruder gets into my home, I just want a dog to alert me than I will do the rest. Some of you have missed the point. I do thank those who have given some good answers so far.

  2. I imagine that they are as good as the training they receive. Why wouldn't they be good at guarding their human's house while the humans are out, if this is what they are taught to do?
  3. yes some of them are and some only give a waring bark
  4. My Boxer girl, Harper Lee, would kiss to death the intruder. She is not a good guard dog, but she looks menacing.
  5. Yes they are good. But Rotwailes are better.
  6. middle way
  7. all dogs can be good at guarding with the right training
  8. No dog is good at guarding without direction by an owner and extensive training. The dog can't decide who is friend or foe. Suppose your guard dog goes after the UPS man or a child? Any dog that barks an alarm is sufficient.
  9. They are great watchdogs, most of the time that's enough for a burglar. Again you should never trust just a dog to protect you or your home unless it has been specifically trained for this purpose by a professional. The fact is there are so many boxers and certainly not every single boxer is a good guard dog. Some potentially could be, but you will never know until you actually get robbed, and would you risk that?
  10. Regardless of the individual dog's guarding instinct, a Boxer is a large dog & as such would be a deterrent - which is all you should expect a pet dog to be. Any more & if he were to confront an intruder he would probably end up being put to sleep if he bit.
  11. They are great watchdogs, meaning they will let you know when anyone comes around, but not all of them are great watchdogs -- they're just too darn sweet. =) I have 2 female boxers, a 7 year old and a 1.5 year old, and they are both great at alerting me when someone is outside. The older one I believe is a great guard dog -- she would definitely stand her ground if someone she didn't know tried to get in while I was gone. The younger one, not so much. She's a sweetheart. Maybe it will come with age though. =) We also tend to discourage their barking incessantly, as we often have company come over. If we didn't reprimand that behavior, I assume they'd be better at it. ;) I would think that an intruder who's trying to break in wouldn't take a chance in assuming a 70 pound barking dog (or two) might turn out to be friendly once he gets inside. A female boxer is more likely to guard than a male is due to their maternal instincts to protect home and family.
  12. Boxers must be trained to become good guard dogs. Since they are a fighting breed they are obviously going to be more fierce than a cocker spaniel. Natural guard dogs have terrier bred in them, but good guard dogs are all trained. If you have a pressa canario and someone breaks in he will attempt to kill that person, but now you have to worry if he will maul your sisters kids when they visit. Boxers have what it takes. Many owners have no clue about training or even caring for a dog. Any dog will assume he is the alpha being of the property and attack people that come near. This shouldn't be confused as being a good guard dog. This dog will hide at the sight of a rolled up newspaper while your house is ransacked. They may even steal the dog.
  13. i have trained many dogs to gaurd, including boxers. I accualy would perrferre them. Very sweet to the owner, but when trained correctly, can realy take down somone. Yes they are very smart, but still goofy and sweet. They accualy arent in the middle of the street, but very head on. I reccomend them as a pet, too. They are not only BRED to gaurd, but do a very good job at it. Best of luck!
  14. if you train any dog hard enough it would make a good gaurd dog. so i would say yes! =D xx
  15. I have a 2 yr old Boxer and I honestly can say I have no clue what she would do if an intruder comes in the house. She does bark very mean, when she hears a noise from outside especially if she can not see what is making the noise. On our walks in the park she does bark at people she feels are threating but most of the time she just wants to be "friends" with everyone. I would imagine if someone tried to break in the house and her family was here she would go nuts. If she was here by herself I think she would still bark and be mean but not sure how far she would go. She is very protective of her "people" that is what we call the kids that play over at our house in the yard. She is sort of like a shepherd in that she has to have them all together. She will run up and down the yard trying to corral them together. If they all are playing in 1 area then she will sit there and just watch. Until 1 of them will go to a different part of the yard and she is right there next to them, herding them all back together, it is pretty comical to watch. If you are looking for a great family dog I would suggest a boxer. We did not clip our dog's ears, 1 because it is mean to put them through that, and 2 because they look more approachable. The great thing about a Boxer if for people that are not familiarly with the breed and only see lets say its head and mouth barking in the window might think it is a pit bull and will back away pretty quickly.
  16. I have noticed that when our boxers are out, they are the most pleasant, sociable dogs you could wish for. However, when they're on home territory they are nasty little gits. My neighbour used to look after mine when I went to work, so I always left the back door open when I left each morning.(we shared the back yard) One day I forgot my lunch, so I went back for it. When I entered the house my dog launched himself at me, only stopped when he realised it WAS me! God, but it hurt! Still, at least I now know my house is safe. And if you leave him(or her) in the car, it ain't ever going to get nicked. They are nasty little sh*ts on home territory. Don't you just love 'em, tho?
