Why do different breeds of dogs bark louder than other types of dogs?

Even smaller dogs will not bark as loud as a larger dog. I wonder why this is?

1. As you stated, it's because of the size. An adult can yell louder than a child, but a child can yell at a higher pitch. All the same concepts.
2. The loudest dog bark comes from an Old English Sheepdog. I was watching a program about it.
3. i agree with the first poster. also, if you look at many of the large breeds, (this is just my personal opinion), they look much more like the ancestral wolf than say a pug does. small dogs and even some medium dogs seem farther detached from their ancestors, while the larger dogs still retain a lot of the old instinct and behaviors. well, i suppose the more you breed a wolf line to get it to a domesticated dog and a small one at that, you've gotta give some things up to get the size you want. so if you're ok with a dog that's closer to it's natural ancestor, then you'll also get a lot of the other characteristics that go along with it.
4. Smaller dogs barks are not as loud because their voice boxes are so much smaller. With a smaller physical size voice box and vocal cords, they cannot produce such large booming sounds. Think about it... Large dog = large voice box large vocal cords large lung expanse w/much more air = > much larger and deeper booming bark! -!-

8. Larger dogs have larger voice boxes. And, smaller dogs have smaller boxes! DUH!!!!
9. Lol, thank god! I am deaf.. who care if my dog wants to bark during all night. my husband and I dont bother from him.
10. mabey it is bcause some dogs are stronger than other dogs and they bark louder

12. Ha ha - smaller don't bark as loud as larger? well you are welcome to come and listen to the Border Terrier bark! VERY loud and horribley peircing - designed to be heard from undergroud when they are digging and worrying the fox, they can even bark effectivly with their mouths full!!
