Status/Image breeds, dogs in the wrong hands, how to prevent this?
Should dog owners be legally compelled to carry a dog license stating that the dog had been trained or is in training and registered at a club, to a standard like the Good Citizen Gold? Subject to random checks/fines for not complying. Should first time dog owners be restricted in the breeds they are allowed to own? ~ I don't live in the USA! ~

- yep in that case, am i still at the 'baby' level with my jack russel? lol
- No because honestly it comes down to common sense more than training. People with common sense know what they don't know and ask questions from people who know more than they do and get training. Stupid people you can train till you're blue in the face and will still do the wrong thing. I know some perfectly good first time dog owners with challenging breeds and others I wouldn't dream of having them own any pet no matter how much training they had.
- NO I have a better idea. Should you be required to have a permit to post such nonsense? Maybe you should have a permit to eat at McDonald's because you might consume to many trans fats and insurance companies or (government insurance) will be paying for your medical problems... In what Nanny State of Fascism do you want to reside? The United Socialist States of America?
- Absolutely not. I will be god damned if anyone is going to tell me how to raise my dogs.
- what are status and image breeds? thats the confusing part. i think maybe certain people shouldn't have "pitbulls" because they train them to attack. but other than that i agree with the other poster, what right do you have saying that people can't have a dog if they don't get some freaky training that only you approve of.
- I think people should socialise and train their dogs well because they love their dog and want to act in a responsible manner not because they fear fines Some people own dogs badly have done for years have you not met someone who is a bad owner and says 'I know I am right I have owned dogs for 30 years'? first time dog owners should select a breed carefully and there are some breeds not recommended however some other owners who have experience should not have them either because they do not do a good job of raising the dog either.
- no to both questions,
- Yes to the first two. However I don't think restricting breed ownership would make any difference.
- One way to prevent further "bad imaging" on certain breeds is to bad ear cropping. Those with pit bulls, doberman pinschers, staffies, min pins, etcetera should expect people to fear their dogs. Dogs with cropped ears not only look terrible, and terribly sad, but they also look meaner in general. Heck, I saw a Great Dane, not only with massive intact balls but also terrible cropped ears, last week at the dog park and he looked ready to attack my small spitz. Those who crop their dogs ears should not be allowed to own any dog.
- Hi memphis, I don't think we can stop this. Whatever law/licencing system may be introduced, non-compliance will always be viewed as 'very low priority' so it would be a pointless exercise. And, of course it would mean that here in the UK 6 million dog owners would have to obtain one - OR there would have to be 'breed specific' licencing - which is what we are trying to avoid. I agree wholeheartedly that something should be done. It sickens me to see 'tough guys' walking down the street 'parading' a staffie or rottie etc. Perhaps any penalties in such cases should be directed to the breeder or seller? PS I'll mail you a photo soon of my little girl - I tried to answer your question the other day but I couldn't answer 'cos it just wouldn't upload.
