allergies with cross breeds?
My husband has allergies and I'm a dog lover so I'm trying to accomodate us both. I had a Weimeraner for a short time and at first he would get full blown attacks but if i kept her off the couch and the windows open it would be tolerable. We're getting a house and I'm hoping I can get a dog again. I found a beagle/sharpei mix and a shepherd/beagle mix thru a rescue. Does anyone know if a cross breed would be better with allergies or is it just a hit or miss? I heard that pugs, and sharpeis produce alot of dander and can wreak havoc on an allergy sufferer is this true? thanks so much

- Yes-its the dander that causes most allergic reactions. All dogs have dander. It's easier to groom and thus reduce dander problems with short haired breeds. I would avoid the SharPei in your situation. Although they are a wonderful breed they have allery problems of their own that often involve their coats and skin. Their allergies may produce more dander which may aggravate your husbands allergies. Good luck.
- Yes, its true. I recommend getting your husband in to an allergist so that the allergies can be treated BEFORE a dog comes into the home. And remember, no breed is hypoallergenic. There is NO difference in hair vs. fur (it's all the same). Anyone who tells you otherwise is misinformed or is trying to cheat you. See if you can foster one of the dogs after the hubby has been on medicine. This way you'll have the chance to find out how his allergies will react to that particular dog but with less of a committment. Good Luck To You! : )
- Cross breeds will not be any better if your husband suffers a badly as you have mentioned. The best bet is to look for a dog like a poodle. They have the least amount of dander and shed very little. The designer dogs like LabraDoodles and a few others have not been proved to be hypoallergenic and they do shed. I feel the ones your have mentioned will not give your husband the releif he needs to have a dog in the home.
- Dander is a BIG problem..there are only a couple of dogs you can get that have little dander. Dont choose a cross breed as you cannot be sure of how much dander they produce. Italian Greyhound have almost no dander, are small, and have no odour. Poodles are the first choice, and there are many sizes. Any dog with powdery fur is OK, but not a long hair, wire hair, or smooth hair, it has to be soft hair. Good luck!
- Take your husband to the shelter, and see how he reacts to the dog. You just never know - it's a hit or miss. I am allergic to cats, but not all cats for some reasons. Since you are buying a house. I would also get a house with hardwood floors. Carpets aggrevate allergies because they are hard to keep them clean!
- There is a company called Allerca that is making genetically altered cats that do not posses the enzyme that causes allergic reactions. Although this is not a dog, It may hold some hope for people who are severly allergic to animals and still want companionship. i'm sure dogs are close to being modified. If money is not a problem you can look into their website. If nothing else its a glimpse at the future now
- First of all, both of those dogs have lots of shedding. Get a small dog that does not shed like a Shih Zu, a scottish terrier, or something of that sort. Secnd, its not always hair but dander, make sure you bathe you dog at least once if not twice a week to keep the dander clean, if you brush it, do so outside. But most of all think, what happens when you get a dog ans he is allergic and has bad reactions to it? will you fid the dog a new home? or will you let your husband suffer. Think of this, when you get a dog it is loking for its forever home, and if its a possiblity you can not have this, dont even get a dog in the first place. Just think and dont jump right into a dog. And for your allergies, i have them too, and I got an air purifier, and it REALLY helped. Good Luck!
