Cross Breeds

does a pure breed belgian malinois, is the same as the cross breed malinois?

my friend has a belgian malinois cross breed and he wanted to know if his cross breed can be intelligent as the pure one. i have also a belgian malinois but i do not know if my dog is a pure breed or cross. my dog has black mask on his face, an erect ears, mahogany brown in color and his nail color is black. the seller told me that my dog is half breed but as i browse the photos in the internet. my puppy really resembles the pure one. i do not know the distinct feature of a belgian malinois. that is why i seek help from the dog experts. thank you all.

  1. looking to your description given yr dog seems to be of cross breed.
  2. Color in most dogs is a variable. Since the breeder of your malinois said that it was not a purebred, why would it be advantageous for them to lie? In Europe, Belgians are considered one breed with color/coat variations. It drives me absolutely crazy when I see an all black Belgian Tevuren and the owner gets upset when you call it a Belgian Sheepdog. Since it's the color that separates one from the other in the US, how the heck are you supposed to know. CB - You're a dog expert? From where? The description fits every Malinois that I've known.
  3. Yes a mixed breed can be just as intelligent, if not more, than a purebred. As far as to whether or not yours is purebred or not, can't help you there... You can read about the Belgian Malinois here: http://www.akc.org/breeds/belgian_malinois/index.cfm
  4. do a www search on Belgian Malinois.....and the other Belgian Sheepdogs while you are at it....go to the right source the majority of people here I wouldn't necessarily trust to tell me the difference between an apple and an orange
  5. Here's another source that may assist you in identifying your dog http://www.american-belgian-malinois-club.org/malfaq.htm Being a proud owner of a Malinois, I can tell you there is one distinct trait......the energy level is extremely high. Believe the seller. I applaud him for his honesty. Many times when you mix breeds you get a tan or brown dog with a black mask. A cross breed is a Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix. The police and military use cross bred dogs. Having had both breeds, the Malinois is smarter but the GSD is easier to train. My female Malinois is 40 lbs, my female GSD was 80 lbs. My Malinois will bark to protect her home, the GSD was more aggressive. The Malinois breed is a healthier breed than the GSD. By cross breeding they are hoping to get the best of both breeds. But for example, you breed a black dog and a white dog, you don't get all black and white dogs. There could be some grey, some black and some white. With a cross breed dog you never know what you have. It takes a long time for a cross breed to become a true breed, that's when you can breed two of the newly created dogs and they replicate themselves each and every time. P.S. I love my Belgian Malinois
  6. well if the breeder told you it's a half breed i wouldn't think it would be pure.if it were pure they would have said that right up front.because that means mo money.
  7. A cross bred Mal is a mutt so it can be mixed with any other same sized breed. Some dogs, just as people, can be dumb or smart, being a purebred or a mutt does not always matter. You will get a smarter dog when you go to a purebred breeder who breeds his dogs to work since a dumb dog will wash out of the work program and not be bred. Purebred dogs that are all Champion bloodlines without working titles can be beautiful but dumb since their breeders only breed for looks. I have seen mutts that we knew the parents on that closely resembled just one parent and could have passed for poorly bred purebreds. If the breeder told you he is a mix then I'm sure he is a mix. Puppies from a GSD parent and a Mal parent can get any percentage of genes(looks, temperament, etc) from either parent so 1 pup is 90% GSD and 10% Mal and another 60%/40% etc. Puppies are not all 50/50 just as kids with the same parents are not identical.
