How do you cross-breed bromeliads, can we cross-breed them ourselves?

Being new to bromeliads, I love the vivid colours, but not the prices. Is there a way that we can cross-breed our bromeliads in our garden to create a new breed.

1. They are a relative of Pineapple. They will sprout what are called "pups" along the base of the plant. Get a copy of SUNSET WESTERN GARDEN BOOK. It's the best gardening book to have----updated every five years, for over 50 years. I sincerely hope this helps you. PAMELA J.
