Cross Breeds

What is so wrong with Labradoodles and cross breeds???

I have a labradoodle and I love him to death! He is friendly, bouncy, incredible intelligent and yet with all that he is amazingly laid back at times! We have had people stop us in the streets to speak to him! Some have even taken pictures! But some people think they are inferior to other dogs, that they are just mutts and that it is wrong that they are bred! Well why? They are so gorgeous! Why is it wrong to cross breed dogs???

  1. Hun, there is certainly nothing "wrong" with them at all. All dogs are GREAT!!! Mutts are some of the best dogs I have met :) People get upset because there are so many mutts in shelters and in rescues that need loving homes, yet pet stores will charge people an arm and a leg for a mutt. Also, responsible and reputable breeders of the certain purebreds (yorkies, shih-tzu, poodles, maltese, etc.) that are now being bred by millers, brokers, and backyard breeders to create these "designer" breeds are upset because they have spent so much time and money on their pedigree and improving their specific breed. These good breeders breed to better the health and temperment of their particular breed. As opposed to millers who are just in to make a quick profit off of throwing two different breeds of dogs together hoping they will have large litters. More pups=more money!! It is a business to them!
  2. some people think that only pure breds are natural and i personly think that they are a buch of ass holes . i have a laberdoodle too. and i dont think they are wrong
  3. There is nothing wrong with cross breeds. People who do not like any dogs that aren't purebred are stupid and stuck up. I had a min. poodle/ dachshund mix and I love him to death as well! Sometimes I think that mixes are better!
  4. With them its not so bad but generally all the dogs that have bad health such as respitory problems etc are due to human mutation such as the sausage dog and bull dog. Man interfeared so much with these breeds they didnt think about the long term effect that having a short snout of compact body size. Certainly with the type your talking about I dont see why there should be any problems, they are generally a healthy lovely dog
  5. I don't think there is anything wrong with the breed. A labradoodle lives next door to my house and likes playing with my poodle :) I think labradoodles are a super cute breed and they should be bred b/c of their uniqueness.
  6. well, its not like he's being a show dog in AKC or something, i think mutts are perfectly okay. some people just dont like them for some reason.
  7. I love dogs, both purebred and mixed breeds. I own purebred chihuahuas and 2 mixed breed dogs. Mixed breeds, mutts are fine. What people are against is the unethical, irresponsible breeding of these dogs and then the "breeder" turns around and asks thousands of dollars for MUTTS! That is wrong!! Both my mutts were rescues. If they had been for sale, I would not have them.
  8. Well, like you said it is a Cross Breed that people are tring to make a prominate breed. When people call a dog a cross breed- you are pretty much saying your dog is a mutt. People breed 2 different kinds of dogs, only creating another mutt! Go to the pound, you can find wonderful loving mutts there that need a home. I think going to the pound is a better idea than BUYING a cross bred mutt.
  9. The dog is fine, but it is wrong to charge thousands of dollars for a cross-bred dog. The breeders who are doing this are not breeding to a standard, not using the best breeding specimens that have had all the health checks for their breed and most breeders I've seen doing this make false claims, such as the dogs are hypoallergenic or are healthier than purebreds (not true). There are thousands of crossbred dogs in shelters that can be adopted for much, much less money and need homes just as much. It doesn't matter that the dog is pretty or nice - I'm sure it is, but so are all the dogs in the shelter and they are no better.
  10. I thought cross breeding made for stronger dogs, who are less prone to problems. I've never heard of anyone putting it down.
  11. i dont have a problem with crosses but it bugs me when people give them names as if they are a breed just so that they can charge more for them. why not just call them what they are crosses.
  12. designer breeds seem like such a waste to set out to breed these kinda dogs that people think are cool, Most of the time the cuteness wears off and people find out that behavioral and health problems are too much to handle and then the shelters are flooded with more dogs that unqualified idiot people want to breed to make a buck. puggles being one type, being a trainer I see so many behavioral issues with this breed. I wish people would use common sense when looking for a dog and find one based on personality then on desiner looks and popularity.
  13. Glad you love your dog. I don't have a problem with mixed breeds, but I do have a problem with mixed breeds created and bred solely to make someone money -- and that is exactly what is happening with the Labradoodle. No, they aren't hypoallergenic -- you can't predict what kind of coat an F1 generation mix will have. No, they don't have fewer health problems. Both the Lab and the Poodle have predisposition for many of the same health problems -- if a crappy breeder doesn't screen, he/she may well produce a mix with these health problems. I have no problem with mutts, as I said. But I do not believe we should be making more simply to make money and cater to a fad -- and I have seen no proof to tell me that this isn't exactly what Labradoodle and other designer mix "breeders" are doing. If you want a mix, rescue one from a shelter, rather than lining some greedy moron's pockets.
  14. There's nothing wrong with mix breeds, it's those who breed them. They don't health test, make false claims, breed for profit, etc ...and all while other puppies and dogs die in shelters.
  15. I dont think there is anything wrong with cross breeds. They can be just as lovely as pure breeds and sometimes nicer. It depends on the individual dog. Id love a springer spaniel but have been warned numerous times that they are really hard work so maybe I could get a cross breed and maybe it would be calmer...but what with I wonder. A dog is a dog no matter what breed. Its not as if we are cross breeding cats with dogs. Cross breeding dogs is no different to humans - one black parent and one white parent.
  16. It's unethical because the only responsible reason to breed a dog while 2million unwanted dogs (mostly mutts) are euthanized each year is because the breeder is dedicated to preserving and improving a particular breed according to it's standard. Responsible breeders do not breed to supply the pet market. Those individuals who are producing mutts and dubbing them with "Designer dog" names are motivated solely by greed and are not only perpetrating an unscrupulous scam on the public, but doing harm to the very dogs they breed. They do NO health screenings or genetic testing at all. They do not even breed to a standard, (because there is none). They get their "breeding stock" from pet stores and puppymillers because no responsible breeder of quality dogs would ever sell their dogs to be used for such nefarious purposes, so the mutts they are breeding are propagating defects, health issues and temperament problems. In the case, for example, of the "Puggle", they are risking the very lives of the dogs they produce by virtue of the breeds they are crossing (pug + beagle). A brachycephalic dog, (such as a pug) with the lung power and prey drive of a beagle would be in serious danger or dropping dead while playing on a hot day. Those "breeders" are very adamant in perpetuating the lie that "mutts are healthier", yet these puggles are already exhibiting epilepsy (a disease that has virtually been eradicated in the lines of responsible beagle breeders), before the age of one and a defect where the bones break very easily and do not properly heal. They don't guarantee to take back their dogs, so these sick animals are now growing in numbers in shelters. It's OK to love your mixed breed dog, but it's unethical to purposely PRODUCE mixed breed dogs in the name of the almighty BUCK. Dogs are not products.
  17. Ehh...dogs are dogs. Cross breed and their mutts. I think some people need to learn how to crossbreed dogs. Personally, I think Labradoodles are ugly. I already thought Poodles looked ugly but I love Labradors. I think Labradoodles look to mutt-y. Sorry, but it's my opinion.
  18. I don't think it's wrong necessarily to cross breed dog. I think it's possible to make a new breed of dog with careful breeding. The problem lies with people who breed these animals pretend this to be a careful breeding process that's been around long enough for a breed to carry a certain temperament and such, when that's not the truth. Proper breeding takes a long time for a specific temperament, and purpose for particular breed of dog. So to claim the Labradoodles are its own breed so soon is "jumping the gun" a bit. I'm sure your sweet doggie is lovely and fine. Dogs are all great--mixed breeds or not, so I dont think other "pure breds" are superior, but often are more predictable when it comes to appearance, temperament, and health issues. But some of these whatever-oodles breeders make this sound like this is something super special by crossing two separate breeds and makes all kinds of promises about their temperatments, appearances and such when it's not true. Not to mention they charge more money claiming that it's special. Tha's when people get upset and warn others and tell them that it's a mutt--meaning that the result can be more unpredictable. Many times when they say crossing a breed with poodle will cause the dog not to shed--and that's totally not true. Dog owners then are stuck with allergy issues and need to replace the dogs, causing the dogs more stress that it doesn't deserve either. Even purebred breeders can be irresponsible---some of them did so much in-breed that the dogs are ridden with problems. In any case, I think people are more angry about the lies these breeders claim than to say there's anything inferior about these dogs instead. Hope that makes you feel better... I dont think your dog is inferior at all what-so-ever!! Loves to your doggie!! :D
  19. There is nothing wrong with them. Some people dont like "designer breeds" like labradoddles and pekapoos because they are generally a rip off if you get them from a "breeder" People are cross-breeding full blood dogs to get mutts then selling them for full blood cost as though they had papers. They dont. Many breeders and just your average dog/breed lover dont like this tactic/scam Also, some folks that pay up in the thousands for a purebred dog think the only dog worth having is a pure one (dont get up in arms, Ive had people yell at me while walking my pure shih tzu saying that I am a heathen for buying a purebreed when I could have "saved some poor mutt", so there are people on both sides) They for some reason think that their $1,500 full blood champion bloodline standard AKC registered Sir Gerald of Hammlinshire poodle is a better dog than your cuddly labradoodle. I havent figured out why, but Im sure it is for the same reasons that someone with a BMW might look down on me and my Chevy. Dont be offended. there is nothing wrong with your baby, or his lineage.;)
  20. I’m sure your dog is wonderful! He is not inferior, just not a registered breed. The problem is that breeders are charging a small fortune for these ‘breeds’ and they are really mutts. When you buy a registered, AKC, breed you are assured of the characteristic of the dog, coloring, coat, etc. In order to be set up as a breed, you have to show a consistency in the dogs. The non-AKC dogs you do not know what you are getting. If I was to not get an AKC registered dog, then I’d adopt a mutt from the pound, since I’d be taking the same gamble and I’d spend a lot less money for the same quality dog.
  21. It's ridiculous to charge hundreds to thousands of dollars for MUTTS you can get at a shelter. There are hundreds upon hundreds of dogs dying in shelters because of irresponsible backyard breeders and puppy mills and there's no need for it. Crossing two breeds isn't making either of them better. When there are helpless dogs and puppies dying in shelters and sitting there waiting for a new home and someone to love them, people are breeding them for money because they can stick some designer label on them and people fall for it. I have nothing again mixed breeds. There are lots of people who have both purebreds and mixed breeds and they love both just the same. People aren't against mixed breeds; they're against the ignorant people who don't do any research, any health testings, and are crossing two breeds to make a quick hundred bucks. I'm sure you love your lab/poodle mix and there are people who think he's a great dog. I don't believe in intentionally mixing breeds to make money; it's not right when there are lots of animals in shelters waiting for a forever home.
  22. I have no problem with a mixed breed pet. I own one. The objection I have is people breed just ANY golden, lab, what have you, with no health checks for hip diplaysia, or heart or elbow checks, to just ANY poodle who can have a host of genetic problems that they haven't tested for either. I had a goldendoodle I used to groom. By 6 months old she had serious hip problems. By 16 months, she had BOTH hips replaced. By 2.5 years old, it was dead. Can't remember which disease got it, but I do remember telling the owners her parents could have been tested for it. People who breed responsibly spend so much money making sure the testing is done, and the dog is suitable to breed because they love their breed SO much, and want to improve and preserve it for future generations. They almost never do better then break even on the cost of breeding. People who breed 'designer' dogs are almost exclusively out for money, and won't use the highest quality dog to breed. Mostly their 'breeding stock' comes from generation after generation of dogs untested for genetic health. If you got a healthy, mentally stable one, you're lucky. Enjoy him. But think hard about putting money in the pockets of those who exploit not one, but two breeds for money. Look for one that needs saving from a shelter if you decide you want another one. It will thank you in SO many ways.
  23. Nothing is wrong with it, ALL dogs are great, unique and special. Everyone is entitled to their opinions but it is wrong to think your dog or any mix is inferior. It is just that negative side of people and unfortunately you will never get away from human ignorance. Ignore them all.
  24. There is nothing wrong with crossbreeding. These dogs were specifically bred to perform a vital function. They are for those of us who are allergic to other dog breeds. I have a dear friend who recently got one and she is so happy to have a new best friend. Anyone who tells you anything else is just being ignorant. All dogs come from wolves. Through the ages wolves became distinct types of dogs and those crossbred and crossbred until the humans got a hold of them. then the humans crossbred until they got a dog that matched their needs. There is no such thing as a true pure bred when you look at history. Many people overlook this little bit (only about 30 million years) of history to say that their dog is better because it has papers. All I have to say to that is BFD! Do not ever feel bad. No one dog is better than another. One dog may be better suited to a specific task, but that should not detract from your feelings for your dog! I guess I will get off my soap box now.
  25. People who say that your do is inferior to other dogs are puppy racists! That's so lame. You love your dog, that's cool. That's all that counts. I've known some really expensive, stupid, mean, and ugly pure breds (not all though). Only ignorant people would say that a dog is less of a dog because it is a cross breed. Labradoodles are cool. I've never met a mean one and they are always happy to play!
  26. No doubt you paid as much for your crossbreed as most people pay for a purebred dog. I wonder if the parents of your dog were xrayed and scored for hip dysplasia and eye tested to make sure that they were clear of hereditary cararact, glaucoma and PRA? I wonder if your dog looks EXACTLY like his parents because his breeder has established breeding lines going back many generations and the skill and knowledge to mate the right 2 animals together to produce something even better than his parents? Serious responsible breeders do all that and, not unnaturally, get upset when people who breed for a quick profit, latch on to some cross with a silly name. Labradoodles were first bred as an experiment which failed. It is not wrong to cross breed if it is being done to produce a dog which is going to do a particular job or fulfill a certain function, if there is no other breed which fits the bill. With all the unwanted dogs around it is wrong to crossbreed for the sake of making a profit.
  27. Nothing at all. What we don't like is puppymillers and backyard breeders exploiting animals for money.
  28. I believe that a cross breed is no way inferior to a purebred (remember all dogs have originally been made up of diff breeds of dogs to make a specific breed!). However it is unfair that so many dogs are being bred when thousands of discarded dogs are stuck in recues :-(
  29. I love dogs all shapes & sizes, pedigree & cross-breed. I own a border x lakeland terrier at he is by far the best dog I have ever had. He is so intelligent, full of full, cheeky. He is so friendly, he absolutely loves people & gets on great with other dogs too. There is nothing wrong at all with cross breeding dogs xx
