Cross Breeds

I have seen or heard people do this...what do you think of them?

1.chain their dog 2. beat them with a newspaper and send them in their crate 3. if they stink they leave them outside until they stop stinking 4.The dog is only let in if it's bedtime, it's storming out(rain, snow) or freezing. Is it true that chained dogs attack? I was reading an article on it. I don't chain my dogs. That's imprisonment to me.

Public Comments

  1. Chained dogs ARE more likely to bite. People suck.
  2. Ever heard of leash aggression? Dogs who are perfectly passive UNTIL they are on a leash? I think this has a lot to do with animals who are chained... they are more aggressive when they are KEPT from getting places... they are trapped, they get defensive... it's flight or fight, and they can't flee because they are chained. I would never do this to my dogs either... Beating them with a newspaper does nothing except make your dog scared of you. It doesn't fix behavior, it just makes it so the dog doesn't do it in FRONT of you...
  3. 1. SO wrong! 2. Abuse is abuse however you state it, wrong again...however crate training a puppy is not bad. 3. Not sure how to react to this...wash your dog! 4. Outside dogs like it outside sometimes, so not sure on this one either...people should spend time with their dogs though. I can't see why dogs that are chained wouldn't bite!
  4. I could not dream of doing this to my dogs. This to me would be considered abuse. Chaining a dog and not allowing it access to food or water is abuse and should be reported. Also if the dog is chained and does not have proper protection from the elements then this is also abuse. Certain people tick me off.
  5. AMEN BASSET.
  6. yea chained dogs are more likely to attack. my aunts chained rot weiler attacked two dogs my shih tzu and my grandmas toy poodle and it acted real weird around my two - year old sister, cousins
  7. There are appropriate times to tether a dog -- none of them typically involve your average pet. I hate to see dogs chained in the backyard all the time. I would much rather see them in a kennel, if they are to be left outside. Chains offer dogs only the feeling of restraint, which can make some dogs defensive (which is why you hear about them attacking). They have no physical boundary, nothing they can call "theirs", just the feeling of restraint without a clear understanding of why. As for the others...I am not an advocate of beating dogs with newspapers, rubbing their nose in their urine, or any of the "old school" wives-tale techniques people learned from their Grandpa. If your dog stinks, give it a bath. If you own a companion dog, it should be in your pack -- that usually means in the house with you, unless you live in the yard.
  8. i hate people that chain their dogs out side ALL THE TIME......That rude, lets chain them out side and leave them in the hot and cold with nothing but a wood box to sleep in
  9. 1. Just wrong 2.I hate crates 3.Doesn't help, bathing does! 4.My dog doesn't WANT to be in the house, unless it's raining or really cold. She does have a very nice doghouse to sleep in!
  10. 1. chains. Chaining a dog show only last a few hours and the dog should have pletty of room to run. Personally I only chained my dogs while my fence was being installed. 2. hitting a table or something other than the dog is ok because they don't like the noise. Hitting the dog-ONLY IF NOTHING ELSE WORKS. Proper training will usually correct the dog just fine. I raise my voice and that's I need to do. Don't like spanking. 3. If they stink give them a bath. 4. All nine of my dog live outside all year round. I have 12 dog houses and put tons of hay out (and in the dog houses) when its cold. If I bring my dogs in, its for medical purposes. All of my dogs are over 35 pounds and love to try to take over the house. They also like to try to chase my 2 cats, and try to eat my bird and rabbit. Any dog that is chained and forgotten about is more likely to become aggressive.
  11. 2 and 3 are awful. I might see chaining a dog up, but ours is so spoiled that she'd go into shock at the very mention of it. There's never any reason to beat a dog, and they won't get any fresher smelling outside (I wash ours in the shower). I know a lot of dogs who have 4., but Molly is so spoiled my husband debates whether to leave the air conditioning on on a mild day in case it might get warm later in the day and she gets hot.
  12. Chaining a dog will not nececaraly make it aggresive. I've known a few chained dogs who were very friendly, it all depends on the training/socailization/excersize
  13. i agree with you about chaining a dog. how would YOU like to be in a chained cell? Its like a prison to them. If you dont have the space, sadly, dont get a dog.......
