Can my dogs be in a snowy (really cold) environment?

i am going to the mountains (where it is snowing) tomorrow and i am taking my 2 dogs both female, a gsd/rottie mix who i 1 year old and a terrier mix who is around 2 years old. Would it be safe to take them with me to the mountains where it is really cold and snowy? Should i buy them doggie sweaters or will they be allright?

  1. i think your little terrier could use a jacket.. and the rottie/gsd could use a thick sweater. they are short haired breeds and get cold faster.
  2. Watch out for preditory animals if you,ll be in the wild with them!
  3. i think u should buy them a sweater just in case n u might have 2 be careful cuz of high elevation n the higher the elevation the less oxygen
  4. your rottie will be fine and if the terrier mix is small get him a sweater also after they finish playing in the snow when your inside check inbetween there paws for chunks of snow they tend to stick to their fur in their paws and is most discomforting have fun!
  5. If they are not used to the cold and do not have thick coats, it is not safe to take them out in the cold for an extended period of time. They are in danger of frostbite, hypothermia and exhaustion. A dog sweater is not adequate protection for a dog that is not used to that environment. Either start with short outings, or leave the dogs home.
  6. It depends on if you plan on keeping them outside. If they will be inside and just go out for potty breaks.. then Yes. If you mean to stay outside..then no. They are short/meduim hair dogs. They're not meant for that kind of weather.
  7. I live in the cold (northern Ohio) and my dogs are quite accustomed to the cold weather. They spend most of their days outside in the winter. However, that means they have a thick coat of fur to protect them. Your dogs probably don't have a thick coat of fur. So they will be cold. Get both of them a sweater. Don't keep them outside for incredibly long periods of time. And watch their paws. Ice will build up between their paw-pads and when that happens, the dogs will probably just quit walking. You won't be able to convince them to keep going. I have a chow (LONG fur) who loves spending the winter outdoors. He stays outside as much as possible. But I bring him in periodically to thaw out his paws. Otherwise, I have to go outside and pick him up and carry him inside because he refuses to walk when his paws are wedged with solid ice. Good luck.
  8. They both should be fine.... just do not let them out for extended periods of time as they can develop frost bite on their feet, esspecially the terrier who will ahve smaller feet... a sweater prob isnt necessary as they will most likely get all excited and run around and get warm and a sweater might over heat them.... have fun :)
  9. they should be fine. if they have short hair, maybe a sweater. But other than that they should be fine. Just watch out for frost bites on their paws
