Has anyone been to a greyhound race track???

I am plaining on going to one tonight and placing some bets, do you think you have a greater chance at winning here than the casino??? I am going for fun but I would like to win some money...anyone have any suggestions to how to pick the winning dog??? I know there are like 7 or 8 dogs who race can I place a bet on all the dog on one race?? If not, then how many dogs can I bet on per race?

  1. It's been a long time since I've been. My grandmother loved to bet on the dogs when she was alive. There are tip sheets at the track and any of the cashiers would probably be able to tell you how the bets run.
  2. 1. ummm I am not sure what kind of responses you are going to get in DOGS regarding Dog racing, brace yourself. 2. yes, you CAN bet on all the dogs in the race, (or at least you can in horse racing) but what you would win would not cover the cost of the bet (in most cases) Go with someone who knows what they are doing. good luck!
  3. Well, it's your life obviously, but when you go to a greyhound track you support a cruel sport that treats dogs like "things" and discards them when they can't run fast enough to make money for the owners. The dogs are not socialized, fed horrible stuff in an effort to rev up their "performance" and then dumped and killed - it's just one step down from dog fighting. Have fun - but look at those dogs and ask yourself where they go after the race - it sure isn't home with someone who loves them.
  4. I used to go with my dad to this dog track in Juarez, Mexico. We had lots of fun, and those greyhounds are such cool dogs. My observation was that the dogs were less consistent than horses. At the horse races you could figure that one of a few horses had a legitimate shot at winning. With the dogs, they pretty much all do. Lots of stuff happens. Sometimes then trip and take out another dog, and sometimes longshots come through. It's a real thrill. They have this mechanical rabbit that they chase around the track. You should NOT bet on every horse. If you read the odds you will see that betting on every dog is almost sure to lose unless a real long shot hits. If one of the favorites takes it down, you won't win enough to cover the other bets. Just go and try to figure out the schedule. Have a couple of drinks and laughs. Good luck! The track I used to go to was shut down because of the poor treatment of the animals. I really don't know if this is pervasive throughout the industry. I didn't know it was cruel to the animals either. You might want to do some research on that.
  5. The racing program you purchase will give you a "sample" of the types of bet you can place. My advice pick several trifectas and wheel them. You will spend more but the payoff is bigger. Greyhounds don't have the human interference factor so they are far better than horses to bet on. CAsinos offer quicker action. Dogs run every 15 - 20 minutes. Have fun and just a hint...If you see a dog take a dump on the way to the starting box run and place a quick bet to win. Believe it or not! P.S. "rescue member" HAS NO CLUE!!!!!! EVERY SINGLE GREYHOUND IS PISS TESTED FOR PERFORMANCE ENHANCERS IN EVERY RACE. This gross misstatement of fact is repulsive! This contributor has obviously watched some rerun of an early 90's documentary put out by PETA or ASPCA. Get with the program recue lover...call the NGA and ask them for the stats on breedings and # of puppies born, then ask them for the guidelines for urinalysis at the track, then ask them for the stats on % of dogs sent to and adopted through recognized greyhound placement agents. One thing is for sure...YOU DON"T DO ANYTHING TO HELP THE PLIGHT OF THE RETIRED GREYHOUND BUT BIT*H ABOUT WHAT THESE DOGS LOVE MOST...TO RACE!!!
  6. If you have ever been to a horse racing track, then the dog track is the same for betting. You can bet to win, place, show, then they usually have special bets like doubles, quinellas, trifectas, etc. Buy a racing program when you get there and bet on the favorites. You probably will win but not alot. Odds on favoriates don't pay much but if you get one race with a long odds winner you could win some cash. Good luck and remember, don't bet more than you can afford.
  7. I never have. Never had the desire to & never will.. To me it is cruel for humans to use these dogs to make $$$$ off of. I'd rather have fun with the slot machines than these poor dogs!!!
  8. Look at the dogs when they parade them and trust your instincts bet on the one that catches your eye for whatever reason it is as good a way as any and better than some of picking a winner Only bet on one dog or you will never come away a winner. the betting odds are against you
  9. You can bet on as many dogs as you like per race. You can bet straight Win-Place-Show or combine several dogs in exacta, trifecta, superfecta, etc. As mentioned above, the exotic wagers allowed in each race are listed in the track's program. Statistically you have a better chance of winning in parimutual gambling than with casinos or slot machines if - big if - you are a decent handicapper & money manager. Look for dogs dropping down in class. Prefer dogs breaking from the inside as they save a lot of ground. Most importantly have fun and enjoy yourself! There is no sight more beautiful than watching greyhounds do what they love, what they were born and bred to do - race. P.S. I wholeheartedly agree that 'rescue member' is very uninformed. I have been in the kennels of a number of racetracks as a representative of an adoption group. The dogs are extremely well cared for, socialised and loved. I have seen more than a few grown men cry when their kennel favorite has to leave to go on to their adoptive home.
