story problems?

I need help with some math story problems. Please show work as to how you got the answer. Or just the formula to get the answer. Do any or all problems you can do!!! Problem 1: The Iditarod sled-dog race extends for 1049 miles from Anchorage to Nome. If a musher is twice as far from Anchorage as from Nome, how many miles has the musher travelled? Problem 2:George and Joan do volunteer work. Joan worked 3 more hours than George. Together they worked more than 27 hours. What possible numbers of hours did each work? Problem 3: One number is 25% of another. The larger number is 12 more than the smaller. What are the two numbers? Thanksssssss!!!!

  1. I believe problem three is 20 and 8. Although, that's a bit of a guess. I just took 1 and 12 and increased each number by 1 until I found two reliable-looking numbers. And I used a calculator, divided 20 by 8, and got 2.5, which is 25% of 10. Don't ask how I'd do the "proper" work to that. I just go with the flow and what looks right.
  2. 1) i believe the equation is 2x+x=1049 but i am not completely sure 2) 27=x+(x+3) then solve for x. that will give you the smaller number add 3 and you will have the other. 3) the answer is 4 and 16. the only way i know how to figure it out is by going 12/.75=16 then subtracting 12. hope that helped!
  3. 1. the musher is 2/3 of the way to nome. Thus: 2/3 x 1049 = 699.333 miles The musher has travelled 699.333 miles 2. This question is a bit more unclear. Did they work more than 27 hours or 27 hours exactly. I'm assuming you are correct in saying they worked more than 27 hours and that i need not answer with an equal hour number for each person. George worked at least 12 hours and one minute (or more) Joan worked at least 15 hours and one minute (or more) 3. The two numbers are 4 and 16.
