- No, it is not the sport that needs banning, just the owners who need to take more care.
- I think it should be banned .It is a disgrace what they do to the poor unfortunate animals that don't live up to their trainers or owners expectations.Purely appalling.
- I think it's a great question! I don't have a problem with the racing, but I know that the dogs (in between racing) are kept in horrible conditions. I know that greyhound rescue is doing lots to help them. We did, however, check on a local racing rescue, and they wanted $1500 to rescue a 3 or 4 year old ex-racer. I could buy a brand new, show quality puppy for that! I think the prices have come down now. But, I think there needs to be some better regulations in how the dogs are treated in between shows, etc. But- you guys are still reacting to the in between stuff- not the racing itself. I think the two ideas have to be split.
- I grew up close to a dog track. I've seen the breeders shoot pups after failing in the schooling races. Even the winners aren't treated much better. Loaded into trucks with carriers on the back and hauled like cargo from track to track. it's sickening and should be outlawed.
- No, just as there are good and bad owners in all other walks of life, so there are also good and bad owners in racing. Because there are bad pet owners who throw their dogs out on the street, should we ban all pet ownership (as PETA would like us to do)?
- i don't agree with it. i mean its just wrong...
- No you can't blame an entire sport for a few bad participants
- Yes, it should be banned. Tens of thousands of puppies are bred to get just a handful of dogs that make it to the track. Then, they are retired after a few years (sooner if they aren't money makers). Can you guess what happens to the puppies that aren't selected to breed or race? What about most of the retired racers? It's disgusting. EDIT: I can tell you what happens - the dogs and puppies that are not useful for racing are killed (and not humanely). Does our society really have a right to do this? And if so, what does that say about us? A famous Indian philosopher once said that you can judge a society by how it treats it's animals... http://www.hsus.org/pets/issues_affecting_our_pets/running_for_their_lives_the_realities_of_greyhound_racing/greyhound_racing_facts.html
- THANK YOU I agree
- Here we go again " I don't like something so ban it " I personally am not a fan of greyhound racing, but we can't go through life banning everything we don't agree with.
- i think that the RULES need to be altered. Although i dont agree with the sport and think that the WAY THEY TREAT the dogs aint right, i dont think that it should be bannedBECAUSE grayhounds are bred to run. Its what they do.
- Well, then we may as well ban horse racing....and those darn Olympic track meets...it's just not fair.....some people and animals just cannot run as fast as others....so unfair.... Oh...and what about those dogs that need rescuing that aren't Greyhounds and never raced?
- Hey dog racing should not be banned. the problem is some of the people that race them but not all of them are like that. Whoever did that to that dog is really sick though
- JMO but I think it should be banned. I've seen too many dogs be put to death when they can no longer race.
- i don't think it should be banned, but i do think it should be carefully regulated. and stiff penalties for anyone mistreating the dogs. thats just the begining. what we really need is stronger advocates nationwide to protect and speak for all animals.
- well experts say that racing causes the dog to let off energy, and that they fell better when there racing, then they do off the track. greyhounds are built to race according to the experts. but in my opinion they shouldnt be used for racing just to please those who are betting on them!!
- It's not the racing that is bad, it's the owners. Some of the Gray hounds LOVE to race just like Husky's love to do snow sledding. Some people that own racehorses don't treat them right but that doesn't mean horse racing should be banned! It's just that that people should be locked up for animal cruelty!
- if you want dog racing to be banned then you'd have to ban horse racing also. the same rules apply for them as well as the same types of leg injuries. if they're not fast enough, often times they are insured for millions of dollars and then have "accidents" so the owners can get rid of them and get their money back. so as you can see if you're wanting to ban one animal sport you'd have to ban them all. i'm glad to see you have a place in your heart for the gentle giant. maybe why i've always called them "great"hounds LOL.
- No. One (probably) wouldn't make the argument that we should ban foot racing because it's mean. Why should dogs be held to a higher state of treatment than humans. I'm certainly not advocating that we ban foot racing. Perhaps greyhound racing needs some standards that should be enforced, but that doesn't make the sport bad.
- ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! As a 30+ yr owner breeder and trainer of racing greyhounds I can assure you that these dogs are doing EXACTLY what they want to be doing. Running & chasing. What DEFINITELY needs to be banned is PARI-MUTUAL greyhound racing. The people in the business (myself included) make money off the pari-mutual wagering. This is where all the abuse and unneccessary killing, both humane and not, come into play. If the industry was no longer, there would still be racing advocates and the dogs would stll run. Somewhat lke a "jackpot" you would pay to enter your dogs, and purse money from the entry fees not wagering would take all the profit hungry kennels out of business. It would be a for fun and a few extra bucks deal much as whippet racing in the US is. Whoever lied to you about your dog is a fool. NO GREYHOUND is "too fast" for the track. Some very large dogs have trouble in the steep banked first turn, causing them to go wide and cause a crash, but any real trainer would see that in a schooling race and take the dog to a whirligig for a few weeks to work on turning. And quite contrary to the episode of the "Simpsons" where Santa's Little Helper gets thrown out of the fence and abandoned. NO TRAINER would risk their license, the license of their owners and kennel operators just to get rid of a dog that is "too fast". EVERY SNGLE dog in every single kennel HAS to be accounted for. You cannot bring dogs in or out of the track kennels without proper documentation & paperwork. The National Greyhound Association is working diligently to bring abusers and offenders to justice, and they assure us that 1 offense is a permanent ban...PERIOD. So please, before you believe what you hear, know the truth. It is the misconceptions about the industry that has been it's biggest enemy. Unfortunately there are people out here that wll believe anything anyone tells them. The MAJORITY of greyhound breeders and traners LOVE these dogs. It is the corporate investment minority and the money hungry scum that are responsible for the staticstics. All the truly "good" people in greyhounds are broke, but contnue to scrape by so as to see these majestic creatures do what they do best...RACE!
- It's not really the racing that bothers me. I don't like to see the dogs treated poorly and then left to die when they don't perform well. I hate seeing animals abused. It's the irresponsible actions of owners that need to be stopped.
- The greyhound like horse racing should not be banned, but a few of the people working there should not be taking care of animals, and they should be banned. Edit Violated, I agree with most of what you say, but with a racing stable of 7, I only owned one horse. The owners of the other six horses, paid for the upkeep and my training of their horses. They would not be owners if there was not "purses"--money paid for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place etc., plus they get to possibly win more money from legal bets.
- Yes - it is disgusting.
- Grey hound racing should be banned, like horse racing, fox hunting...................... The reason that they should ban greyhound racing because if the dog is no good they usually chuck them away, literally. I dont mind any animal related sports but what gets on my nerves is the way they treat animals afterwards,if they are not up for the "job",they are chucked on the scrapheap.
