what are peoples views on greyhound racing?

I know a few greyhound owners and trainers and i love greyhounds personally as pets i was just wondering other people's views on greyhound racing and issues such as muzzling in public for a dog without an aggressive nature

  1. blah
  2. I think its crap. Well nothing wrong with racing itself...its the aftermath. The fact that the dogs are homeless and usually put to sleep. Lucky some people rescue em and make them adoptable. btw they usually muzzel the dog during a race to avoid accidents with the lure. Its the same with pure lure coursing (except Jack russell terrier). Also greyhounds are not trained so it isnt really so harmless. They have bitten small children that get too close at certain times (like while theyre eating)
  3. It's cruel
  4. why would you have to muzzle a greyhound??
  5. unecessary cruelty
  6. you can't abuse an animal and expect it to perform at any caliber. my best friend has been adopting dogs off the track for 5 years now and has 6 greyhounds on her farm. most of the owners on the track want nothing more than a good home for their dogs. the muzzle is to keep the dog from biting a fellow racer or handler out of excitement.
  7. Greyhound racing is awesome, I go as often as I can to the track. Someday I hope to own a racer(s) of my own. Greyhounds are muzzled while racing because they are *very* competitive and will bite/nip other dogs during races (the dogs try and do this even through the muzzles). But most importantly the are muzzled because they are extremely thin skinned so any bite, even a small nip can break the skin and cause serious damage. We take our greys to a dog park to run with a group of other local hounds and the dogs there are muzzled not for being aggressive but as a precaution against accidents.
  8. They are ONLY muzzled while TOGETHER!!! Due to the ***VERY*** slight risk of a fight.Even as docile dog as a g-hound can get fired up when ready to or actually racing. They REALLY want that "bunny"! Racing?...wish there was a track nearby!!! Neat dogs, wish I had room.
  9. Greyhounds love to run and are bred for it. No one abuses them or forces them to run - and no one hits them with a whip to make them go faster. The problem is what happens afterward - if they're not winning. But luckily for greyhounds, there are MANY rescue organizations to help them get good homes. They're a lot better off than the average pet dumped at a shelter. As far as muzzling, that's done for the safety of the dogs to keep them from biting each other in the excitement of the race. I don't think that pets should be forced to wear muzzles in public unless the dog is nasty.
