How do you feel about Greyhound Races?

I adopted a "retired" Greyhound and has been the Greatest Dog I ever had... And, I had many of them. He was like a cat, hugging me with his whole body. So protective of me and so very Loving! Why then Can't We Have them as pets and not for racing?

  1. I am happy to hear you adopted him! I disagree with Greyhound races and Horse races. Anything to do with animal sport, I highly disagree.
  2. HATE GREYHOUND RACEING!!!! I had a greyhound too, a rescue. We got him from Hemopet, that dog blood bank. He died 2 weeks ago from cancer. :'( They are, in my opinion, the sweetest breed of dogs ever. They are so misunderstood. Greyhound racing is in many ways also animal abuse and I'm against it.
  3. I do not think it is needed, at all. I believe people should rather do agility than race their dogs, they recieve a means of exercising - and it can be competitive too!
  4. I disagree with Greyhound racing. I'm glad to hear you gave one a home.
  5. Greyhounds are totally awesome, aren't they? My oldest is the most special dog I've ever had. Unfortunately, greyhound races are money makers and the dogs themselves are nothing more than a way to make money. But there are some States that have already banned greyhound racing and more will follow. The upside is that there are now many, many greyhound rescue groups so there's was fewer greyhounds who lose being killed than there used to be. And that's why all the people who appreciate and love these graceful, gentle dogs can adopt them to enrich our lives. Keep on enjoying your greyhound!
  6. I discourage all use of animals for entertainment. Rarely are they taken care of in a fashion that suits them. Circus and racing animals are usually void of all human care and love, its sad. I'm glad you've rescued him, he's lucky to get out "retired" usually, when they've "run their course" so to speak, they have them put down, because you can't make any money off of a slow hound. Many people DO have them as pets, which is fantastic. Others of them use them for improper races, which is barbaric and cruel.
  7. Ideally, racing would be like agility, or earth-dog trials, or flyball, or what ever other fun, not-for-profit "sport" and owner and dog want to do together. In reality, racing is done for profit, generally with the "merchandise" being treated in the cheapest way possible. This I think should at least be better regulated as to the treatment of the dogs. I think banning just sends it underground, creating even more problems. I have heard of greyhound and whippet rescues that still race, but it's just a fun weekend out, letting the dogs do what they were bred for. I have no problem with that sort of racing.
  8. Greyhounds are for racing because they ran fast. Some of them are really pets!!
  9. I am 100% against Greyhound racing, this is as bad as dog fighting. when the greyhound doesn't win for awhile, I saw a documentary that the owners them self or they had someone else club the dog to death than they put it in a bag and threw it in the garbage. there should be a st rick law against this and dog fighting. in dog fighting sometimes the dogs will tear chunks of flesh out of each other.
  10. Wow! A PETA freak convention right here on Y/A pets/dogs. The very fact that those retired greyhounds make such super pets speaks well for the excellent care they receive during their racing careers. Now there are a few bad apples in greyhound racing just like there are anywhere else. For the most part tho' it is a highly regulated sport, and the dog are some of the best cared for dogs on the planet. The fines that are imposed if one of those dogs is abused or neglected put people into bankruptcy they are so large. Take my word for it, those dogs live for the times they get to chase that bunny. To them there is nothing more fun to do on this planet.
  11. I don't have a problem with racing animals. If the breed is bred for that. If you want one for a pet instead of racing that is your choice and nothing wrong with it. Animals are bred for different things, some for pulling sleds, some for herding cattle others for racing. It is in them to do what they are bred for. The problem comes in when humans start putting emotions and thoughts on the animal that the animal does not know anything about.
  12. I do not care for racing any animal. I would guess because it's too expensive for most people to get into horse racing so the greyhound got bred for that job. I don't know much about Greyhound racing but then I'm not a fan of racing any animal. Let the racing be with men and their vehicles of whatever sort, after all the man has a choice the animal (greyhound in this case) doesn't. Glad your greyhound has found such a wonderful home to spend his retirement years. He deserves it after running his legs off.
  13. You can have them as pets...breeders sell them for a multitude of reasons not just racing. Greyhounds want to run....most people have no way of allowing these dogs to run at the speed and distance that they want to. Greyhound racing is not cruel....these dogs love it. They are taken better care than people think. They are fed very expensive food i.e. stews, pastas, peanut butter, high end barley and hamburger meat, they are kept in climate controlled kennels that are attached to 150' x 300' runs which allow them to run until there hearts are content. They are then, after they are finished racing, used as studs or Dams, then adopted out. 96% of retired racers are adopted out compared to only 69% of Peta animals, who has the better record?
