Why is horse racing more socially acceptable than dog fighting?

Eight Belles is just as dead as any fighting dog, and for what ?

Public Comments

  1. The horse do not fight, they run.
  2. Thank you Pjt. Dog fights are blooded and brutal and Im against it 100%. I love Michael Vick as a football player but right about now hes definitly not one of my favs. Horse just...run....thats it...they dont bite or attack each other..........they run. The dogs......kill each other.....in really......f***ed up ways.
  3. Unfortunately, eight belles death was very public, and therefore the public has blown out of proportion. These horses love racing, its how they thrive, if they were taken of the track they would go crazy with all the pent up energy, take it out on their owner, and subsequently would meet the same fate. The issues are not with horse racing, but with the breeders. There are serious issues of inbreeding.
  4. Horses like to run. Dogs would rather not have to fight to the death to survive. Like mixing apples and oranges.
  5. Because the main object in dog fighting is to hurt one of the dogs whereby there is a winner. This is not the case in horse racing.
  6. Dogs fight until one of them is dead. Horses run a race. The winner doesn't have to die.
  7. Richer people like it. Lower mortality rate. Injury is incidental, not a given.
  8. There's always a chance some person or animal is going to die in any activity they partake in. A man who slips in the shower and hits his head is just as dead as any fighting dog. A beloved pet dog that gets into the chocolate is just as dead as any fighting dog. A fish that jumps out of it's tank is just as dead as any fighting dog. The difference is nobody wanted these lifeforms dead. In every dogfight somebody wants one of the dogs dead and half the time somebody's going to get their wish. It's the difference between situations where an animal might die by accident and an animal is supposed to die for entertainment.
  9. The owner off Eight Belles isn't a crack addict like most dog fighters are.
