6. 2005 Preakness. Afleet Alex stumbles at the top of the stretch, almost going down on his knees. Then he recovers, to win going away.
7. When Secretariat won the Belmont by 31 lengths. It was absolutely amazing. They have this awesome picture of the jockey riding him looking back to see where the rest of the field was, and the rest of the horses look like tiny dots. He left them in the dust. He was probably the greatest racehorse of all time. My friend has one of his grandsons, and hes a great example of how secretariats greatness carries to his foals.

9. 1989 Preakness..Sunday Silence beating Easy Goer by a nose. I was there at Pimlico that day with absolutely no view and a handful of winning triple tickets with a Darby Dan Stable horse who came in third.
10. I have poster that TBchick described. Secretariat was an amazing horse. The most memorable race for me was the Canadian International at Woodbine. Secretariat with Eddie Maple in the irons won by 12 1/2 lengths.
11. Affirmed vs Alydar - 1978 Belmont Stakes. Most experts agree this was the greatest of all time.
12. Excellent horses...except for sexydiva8's minor error; Invasor of course won the Breeder's Cup Classic, not the Kentucky Derby. My favorite was Ruffian. She was incredible...never defeated or even headed. Quite possibly she was a better runner than even Secretariat. Please, a uniquely qualified individual made that claim not me...Lucien Lauren said "God as my witness, I think she may be faster than Secretariat." (Mr. Lauren was Secretariat's trainer. Who would be more qualified to make the comparison?) Rest in Peace Sophie, I'll see you on the Rainbow Bridge.
13. In person-Geechee Lu, Santa Anita, on the grass, 1960 like 80 to 1 odds went from dead last around the entire field to first at the finish. On film-Phar Lap ("Wink of the Skies" or "Lightning") at the Agua Caliente Handicap March 20, 1932 the greatest horse to ever race. (with all due respect to Secretariat and Seabiscuit)!
14. The greatest horse I've ever seen RACE in person was Seattle Slew, although funnily enough it wasn't in a race he won. I saw him in the Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park. Slew was coming off his win in the Belmont Stakes, his coronation as the first Triple Crown winner in a quarter-century. Slew was magnificent, but he was up against a tough challenge: he was facing J. O. Tobin, a son of Never Bend who had set a new track record at Hollywood Park in his previous start. Slew finished a well-beaten 4th in the Swaps, a race he never should have run in. But I still think he was one of the most magnificent horses I've ever seen. In 1985, I had the chance to see Slew again, at Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky. He was a beautiful horse, grown massive as a stallion, black except for notes of tan on his muzzle and flanks. Slew had the most incredible eyes of any horse I've ever seen: a true look of eagles. The greatest horse race I've ever seen on TV was the Affirmed-Alydar Belmont Stakes. Racing just does not get any better than this. Affirmed and Alydar had bitterly contested the Derby and the Preakness. In the Belmont they hooked up with six furlongs to go and from there it was stride for stride, each trying his hardest and neither giving a single inch. Affirmed prevailed after fighting back when Alydar got his head in front mid-stretch. I don't know if there will ever be a better race than that one, although Personal Ensign's come-from-behind defeat of Winning Colors in the Breeder's Cup Distaff comes close. Spectacular Bid's tour-de-force campaign as a 4-year-old was a series of demonstrations of superiority, capped off by his walkover in the Woodward stakes. Secretariat's Belmont Stakes 31-length margin was something that had to be seen to be believed. But I think that for sheer drama and what racing is all about, Affirmed-Alydar in the Belmont stakes doesn't get any better.
15. 1973 Belmont Stakes. Secretariat won by 32 lengths and broke the world record for mile and one quarter by 4 seconds, which amounts to about 20 lengths!
16. i haven't seen many that would stand out like dogs b***s but the last time makybe diva in MELBOURNE CUP raced i didn't see it but stopped at a shop on the way home just as it started, i was nursing my 3mth old daughter and when she (the horse)got to the last 100 metres there i was standing on the footpath cheering her along til the end. what a true legend and as for Glen Boss good on ya mate.
17. T - Bred Chick 123 is right. There is on interesting fact that she left out.....When the horse crossed the finish line, it was actually GAINING SPEED. He was moving faster then he was the ENTIRE race, which is unheard of. Now that's a horse.
18. Native DIver versus Viking Spirit in the Los Angeles Handicap at Hollywood Park was the best I ever saw in person. A close second was Johnny Longden's final ride on George Royal in the San Juan Capistrano Handicap at Santa Anita.
