Feeding hay versuses grass?

What is the benefit of feeding hay over just pasture? I have 6 horses on 30 acres of timothy and rye where the horses stay 24/7. Only hay available in the area are bahia, timothy, and alfalfa. My horses do not need extra protein. They are not ridden alot, as a matter of fact I have a 10 mont colt, a five year overwight arabX, an extremely pregnant mare, a retired polo pony, a retired race horse and a rescue that has no front teeth and has foundered badly in the past so she is just hanging out grazing for the rest of her life. I do supplement their diet with grain daily.

  1. Hay lacks some of the nutrients horses would receive when they eat straight from the pasture.
