How much should i feed my 8 week old golden retriever puppy?

We just got a golden puppy on saturday and have been feeding her 1/2 cup purina puppy chow 3 times a day and don't know if that is enough for her.

  1. on the bag it usually gives a chart or instructions that say how much to give according to their wieght. hope this helps but it sounds like you are giving it plenty for now.
  2. what does the box say?
  3. Eight weeks old is not very old, and if you're feeding her three times a day, that sounds sufficient.
  4. The bag of food wil give you a suggestion but really each dog is different so start by giving 1/2-3/4 cup and see after 30-45 minutes how much she's eaten of it and either decrease or increase the amount. Have set feeding times and let her munch on it for 30-45 minutes then take what she isn't eating away. This will help establish a feeding and pottying routine for the dog and you and make it easier to potty train. You will probably need to increase the food amount every week or so until she is about 6 months old but she should be giving you signs that she is still hungry. My Great Dane who is 19 months old will sit in front of me and stare at me then bark and run to her food bin where as my Keeshond who is 9 years old will push her bowl across the floor and my 3 1/2 year old GermanPitLab mix will lay on her bowl and my 3 month old Chihuahua will bark at his bowl. They all have different ways but you will get to know these habits.
  5. It's usually best to allow puppies to eat as much as they like -- they don't overeat. If she's looking thin, you need to add more food, obviously. Honestly, the back of the bag is rarely a scale to go by -- in my experience, it's always been too little or too much for my dog. Personally, I'd say feed another 1/2 cup in one of her meals. If she eats it all, then just keep feeding her a full cup for that meal. Puppies are growing, they need to eat. :)
  6. I would not feed her that brand of dog food. I would get her a better brand and feed her 1cup 3x day.
  7. I used Purina with my Golden and he is healthy, happy, and 6 years old... looks/acts like he is two years old ! You might look to see if you have the Puppy food for Large dogs, because it will make a different for growing bones. Like everyone said, follow the instructions on the bag. I fed the same amount, but I fed only day and night, then after about 6 months, I changed to just at night with a full portion. Goldens like to chew and to swallow, so don't give her any toys except for puppy toys that she can't destroy and swallow. Also, no people food. Have a few puppy parties to invite your people friends to socialize with your puppy. And after the Vet says OK (12 weeks), have a puppy party too. I was already training my puppy during the first week, and by 12 weeks, you can teach her bite inhibition, to walk with a leash, to sit, stay, come, and down... and more. They are terrific dogs !
  8. you feed her one cup in the morning and one cup at night and the more she or he starts eating make it one and one half to times then in the morning and night i know because i have one
  9. You should feed him purina puppy chow with purina puppy plan feed him about one to two cups make sure you feed him/her at the exat time three times a day 7:00AM-3:00PM-8:00PM
  10. go to an pet store and ask or look on your puppy food bag. you can also check other food bag feeding instructions. you are so lucky u got a golden retriever puppy! i love those dogs. i had an adorable border collie pup she was 2 months and she was sick from the spca. she was diagnosed with parvo and sadly died bleeding to death. im warning you...get your puppy parvo shots. puppies are especially prone to it!
  11. It all depends on her weight. It will tell you on the packet how much you should feed her according to her weight.. At 8 weeks she should weigh aboiut 9/10 kilos so check on the bag how much you should be giving a Golden Retriever of this weight. Don't forget to keep increasing the amount as she grows. Goldens have a tremendous growth spurt between the gage of 4 - 7 months and at that time they will need about 900 gms. per day, divided into three meals of 300 gms. When they reach 6 months you can give her two meals per day, i.e. the same amount divided into two. My two Golden pups are now 4 months old and they are going through a very leggy stage. They have three meals per day at present,. I would say what you are giving her is not really enough for a growing puppy. I feed Science Plan and according to the Bag she should be having twice the amount you are feeding her at present. She will always leave what she doesn't want. You could soak her food initially until her teeth come through. Then they like the 'crunch'. Good luck and enjoy your pup.
  12. The bag should say how much you should feed based on the dog's size. What you describe is about half the portion of what a full size Golden would eat in adult food in a day so the portion you describe sounds about right.
  13. HI! I'm here in US and Pat B is correct. Your Golden should be getting 1 cup of food 3 times a day. Honestly Puppy Cow is a very low grade food for a Golden but if that's all you have avaible to you then thats fine. I feed my pups Canidae and found that they were very healthy and grew at a very good and normal rate. Another really good food is Wellness. Please check into these foods for your Golden pup. NIce to see another Golden person here on Q&A.
