How are the Shih Tzu Puppies?
So, I am thinking about buying a Shih Tzu puppy which is 9 weeks old for $350 dollars. It is AKC registered. What I am wondering is if $350 is too much for a Shih Tzu or is that a deal? Also, Is it hard for them to be potty trained and are they good dogs? I've never had a "small dog" before, i'm used to having boxers around. Anyways, are their lifespans long or are they really short like a boxer? Welp, thanks for all the help and i would really like to have serious answers only though. Seriously thinking about buying one.

- Thats a great price. I got my pomeranian crossed with a pekinese for $350. There lifespan is between 14-20. Small dogs live longer.
- It is a great deal. Shih Tzu's are normally around $1000. So thats a great deal. They are hard to train because they are small. you have to be patient because it takes about a year to potty train them. They do have long lifespans. Fact: the smaller the dogs the longer they live. Good luck and best wishes...
- Instead of getting a $350 puppy go to the kennal and find on that is desperate to have someone own them. I bet you find a super cute puppy at a kennel. Sih Tzu puppys are small and cute. There pretty good. They love to be next to you. You have to wash them at least every 7 weeks -Tiffany
- 1. thats a VERY good price 2. IDk about the potty trainin not much of a small dog person more of a small medium 3. From people that have dogs like that yeah they are good dogs. v4. the small the dog the longer they live
- I own a Shih Tzu and he's about 7 or 8 years old. I raised him since he waz a puppy. They do make good dogs but careful because some of them are sumtimes unfriendly with strangers. But my dog is friendly with every1. Some Shih Tzu puppies usually cost about 400 or 500$. I wuld say datz a pretty good deal. Good Luck!!!!
- just dont let it breed with an ocelot the you will get shih t elot's
- That is a good price for a shih tzu. My aunt has one and my sister has and Imperial Shih tzu. Both were extremely difficult to potty train but it can be done with consistency. One is very calm and docile but the other is crazy hyper. I think they tend to take on personality traits of their owners because they are such great companion dogs. Small dogs do live longer than large ones. They don't shed much at all so they do require grooming. My sis gets her dog's hair cut at PetCo about once a month for $25.
- There really great dogs and they require very little care. The only thing you have to worry about is there hair
- Depends on if your getting it from a responsible breeder or a backyard breeder. One of the main differences is a backyard breeder is using their pet as a money making machine with no regard to standard or testing. The only reason to breed is for the betterment of the breed which I'm sure this BYB is not doing. Check into it for yourself. Backyard breeder vs responsible breeder.
- That is an unbelievably low price for an AKC Shih Tzu!! They are usually very expensive dogs. I have one and he has been horrible to potty train. They are very territorial dogs and often piddle any where and every where. But I love mine anyway. They are also very prone to allergies and ear infections. I have to take mine to the vet every few month to have the hair pulled from his ears and then he ends up on ear drops for the infection. The groomers are not able to pull the hair from his ears like you have to do on a regular basis. I also have to give him allergy pills every day and prednisone every otherday.
- Whether the dog is AKC registered or not is not the first question you should ask, nor is the price indicative of much of anything. What you really need to know is "How and where were the puppies raised?" How much were they handled? What is the temperament of the parents, grandparents, great-grandparents? What are the genetics behind this pup? Were the parents tested for the health issues of the breed? please see http://www.shihtzu.org/Info/want_to_own.asp?menu=Info and http://www.shihtzu.org/Info/questionstoaskabreeder.asp Please do your research before you buy a pup. It is not much fun to buy an inexpensive pup and then find out it has health or temperament issues that may cost you a fortune in vet bills and specialized training.
- A pure bred Shih Tzu puppy for $350 is in my book a deal! Around where I live pure bred Shih Tzu puppies go for $600 for the males and like $700 for females! So that is def. a deal! Potty training any dog can be difficult, but Shih Tzus' are usually very smart, so should be easy to train. With any puppy though they can be easily distracted. So make sure your puppy is eyes on you! Shih Tzu Dogs' life span is about 15 years or more! So this is a dog that will be with you for a long time. Special needs for Shih Tzus' are attention and grooming!! They need to be groomed about 4 times or more a week! It all depends though if you want your puppy to have long hair (like the ones in show) or if you want your puppy to have short hair! Either way they need to be groomed! Major health problems include allergies, cleft palate (defects to roof of mouth), eye problems, renel disease(kidney problems), and von Willebrand's disease (mild blood clotting/blood disorder). Check the inside of your puppy's mouthwhen you get it. If you see any defects it could be from pore breeding. This disease (as mentioned above) is cleft palate. Shih Tzu Dogs' are cute and will be friends with you forever! Well I hope this information helps with your decision! And blessing to you and your new pup!!
- good deal they are 500 and up ussually i got mine for 349 good luck they are great dogs.
- I like you have always had large dogs until I saw a shih tzu puppy in a pet store and knew I wanted one. I bought mine for $350 and he is not papered so finding one for that price that is akc is a great deal. They are wonderful, loving dogs. They definitely have their own personality. Mine took only about five or six months to housebreak but I have a friend who is still trying to housebreak hers and he is over a year old. They do need lots of grooming so if you are ready for that then go for it. I don't think anybody could ever regret owning a shih tzu.
- The price is right. It all depends on if the parents are of champion blood lines and the like, if so they are going to cost more. You could consider litter training your pup. I use Purina second nature litter with all my little guys, they use it very well. I have one little girl that doesnt even like to go outside, so she uses it the most.
- That's a great price, mine was for $600. They are easy potty trainers. My family got a female one. We trained her by letting her out often on a leash. And every time she peed on the carpet, my mom would put a laundry basket over her where she peed because she would never pee in her room. Eventually she got scared of the laundry basket and stopped peeing on the carpet within a few weeks. Now she just stands by the door and barks when she needs to go. She usually comes right back in after doing her duty, shih tzu's aren't fond of the cold. Shih Tzu's make great dogs, but they can be stubborn sometimes, especially if they're having fun outside. Another funny aspect I've seemed to notice, when around people they love to sit on the couch or bed with you, not the floor. My parents hated that, but my cousins shih tzus would do the same! Good luck.
- that is an amazing price for a purebred shih tzu!! i would take that deal, if you seriously want the dog. mine cost me $250 (but i bought him from a family member). no, they are not hard to potty train and they are great dogs. they are very quite and love to play...they love to play with feet, and they like to lay on feet too. my mom has had her shih tzu for about 8 years and he is still going strong. the only downside to them is the grooming. if you chose to keep the hair long, it is a lot to comb it a couple times every day, but if you chose to keep them trimmed, they can do 6-10 weeks without a haircut, depending on how fast the dog's hair grows, how short it was cut, and how long you are willing to let it get. they do tend to get matts when the hair gets kind of long, so make sure to check the dog's coat every other day to make sure they aren't matting up. i hope this helps some...anything i can do to help someone chose a shih tzu. good luck!
