At what age do puppies of the opposite sex have to be separated?
I just got two puppies - one boy and one girl. They are both around 12 weeks old. At what age do I need to keep them separated in order to prevent mating?

- When ever the female goes into her first heat at around 6 months of age.
- Ask hi's mather....He maybe now :)
- female's uselly have there first heat cycle at about 7-9 months so they need to be seprated or fixed at about 6 months
- As soon as the female comes into season, you have to separate them during her cycle. This will happen at about 6 months.
- I'm not sure when, but I do know why.... Because they have more sense and decency than sodomite human beings.
- The answer is dependent upon the sexual maturity of the puppies. Some breeds of dogs reach this milestone earlier than others. I would have them spayed and neutered as soon as recommended by your breeder and veterinarian. Both can be an invaluable resource of information and guidance on this subject.
- Just get them spayed/neutered soon, and you won't have to worry about it. Around 4-6 months is the time frame where they'll become particularly interested in each other as more than a play mate.
- Females usually go into their first heat by the age of 6-8 months. Males tend to follow shortly behind. Have you thought of spaying and neutering them? That is the BEST way to prevent unwanted puppies. It also helps keep the dogs healthier longer. It prevents certain types of cancers and other illnesses. It will calm them as well. This is what I would recommend. There are too many unwanted pups around. It's inexpensive and easy to do. Contact your local shelter, they should be able to direct you to a clinic where they may have vouchers available to get a free spay and neuter. I hope this helps and you decide to do whats really best for your pups, good luck!
- Your female will go into heat at about 8mo. You will notice small drops of blood and he will show a big interest in her. The first week she won' have anything to do with him. There will be a lot of fighting. The second week she won't leave him alone. The third week- back to fighting. If you don't want puppies ever, then get at least one fixed. They will drive you crazy every time she comes into heat. And you will probably end up with puppies, anyway. Where there's a will there's a way. Your male isn't the only fish in the sea.
- NEUTER THEM, there are too many unwanted dogs that are euthanized each day!
