Cross Breeds

I have 2 female maltese puppies. Best way to potty train them. They have been use to going on paper sometimes.

they are 4 months old. When I got them they were living on a porch, able to go out a doggy door to the fenced in yard. I can't let them do that. I can't always walk them. They go on the paper sometimes or on the patio porch wherever. I walk them to the paper and sometimes they go, when I'm not around they go where they want, and the paper at times. Should I crate them all the time and let them out only to go to the bathroom?

  1. try tieing them up outside (if they are used to leashes) and let them go out then (make sure after u feed and water them u take them out to go to the bathroom) and take them out atleast 3 times a day and if water and food runs right through them try taking them out every 2 hours
  2. The problem with paper training is that it teaches a puppy to go potty in the house. The best way is not to paper train, but to provide frequent visits outside. However since you say that is not possible....then yes when your not home or able to supervise them they should be in their crates. The crate needs to be roomy enough for them to be comfortable, but not big enough for them to do their biz in one part of it and sit in the other (otherwise they will potty in the crate) You can also get "puppy pads" which are "scent marked" to encourage a pup to potty on them. Or you can still use newspaper, but when changing the newspaper don't remove all the old ones...keep a lightly soiled newspaper in with the new clean ones to encourage the pup to return to the scent.
