I would like to know any accurate info on Maltese puppies that anyone has to offer.?

I just bought a 14 wk old Maltese puppy. She is only 2 pounds which I understand is small but apparently she was a "runt", if you will, but she is completely healthy as far as I know. She eats normally, plays, etc I would just like any bit of info that anyone has that I might not know.

  1. As a groomer, I can tell you that you should introduce her to grooming ASAP. Malteses require a lot of grooming and its always best to start them young. Get her used to bathing and blow drying, as well as nail trimming and ear cleaning. You can do all these at home or bring her to a professional groomer. You should also buy a soft pin slicker brush and fine tooth metal comb if you don't already have both, and she needs to be brushed and combed every night. Yes, puppy fur is soft and usually doesn't tangle much, but she needs to get used to daily grooming now, because as an adult, it will be mandatory. Also, she will trade her downy fur for her adult coat between 6-12 months of age, and the transition is usually very abrupt. When her fur changes it will be more prone to matting as well, so get on top of the brushing sooner than later. Lastly, Maltese are prone to tear stains in the corners of their eyes, but it's easy to avoid if you just wipe the eyes with a warm wash cloth once or twice a day, or use eye wipes made for dogs, and make sure you wash her face thoroughly with tearless puppy shampoo at every bath.
  2. I had one of those very cute intelligent dogs. He was very intuitive to my feelings, always knew when I was sad. They love to be cuddled and like to sleep where it is really warm, like your bed. Mine was not a yappy dog, easy to train. As a full grown dog he only weighed 6 pounds, and was healthy and energetic. They are very timid and do not like yelling or loud noises. I am not sure what you know yet or don't know so I hope this helps a bit.
