- Had one, would not again, #1 it's white. . . not alot of playing outside, (green grass) lot's of grooming, and bathing. I've had smarter dogs, all went to obedience school, this one was in the latter part of the class. I had Lasha Apso, Shed Ziso, Yorkies, much more well behaved. Maltese are beautiful, but I would not have another one.
- Malteses are such of a good type of dog. But please don't leave too long. Every single dog needs time with their owner or they will have "Separation anxiety" (destructiveness and barking) when left alone too much . How long are you planning to leave? If it's one or two hour then I guess it's okay, but don't leave for like 8 hours!
- no, maltese cannot stay home by themselves for long periods of times because they have a small bladder due to being in the toy group. i can tell you good things and bad if you want. good things - they're small, smart and pretty bright, have long and silky fur. bad things - they're VERY fragile towards other people, they have seperation anxiety, they bark too much, a lot of combing and brushing, and its too hard to housebreak them. i would definitely be careful with a maltese. i love them and they are wonderfully bright toy dogs, but you really need to be careful while training them. if you have a little sister, brother, or a child thats under the age of 8 years old, i wouldnt consider getting one. they are small breeds of dogs and they are too fragile to be handled roughly. little children can either get hurt or the maltese can get injured quite easily. overall, they are good companion dogs but a lot of brushing will be needed so be ready for that. you should also watch out for their health. maltese can easily get skin respiratory and tooth problems. when taking maltese puppies on a walk, they tend to listen but they tend to be a LITTLE BIT stubborn, in which they'll probably like to sniff anything that is around them and will probably get too distracted. you should be careful with their coat, too. they can get dirty very easily as you can see their coat is white. with heat, its not such of a problem because they are inside dogs. maltese have a nice nature and are careful with things around them.
- Any puppy should not be left home alone for more than three hours at a time. If you have a busy schedule, consider adopting. Getting an older dog will ensure that it can handle being home alone. And be sure to do your research! EVERY dog needs to be trained and that takes time AND money! Check out www.petfinder.com.
