how much do german shepherd puppies go for?
i want to get my boyfriend a german shepherd puppy for his birthday, but i need to find out how much they generally go for. i'm pretty sure he wants to train it to be in a k-9 unit type of thing since he's going to be a cop. i haven't told him anything yet, i'm just trying to come up with ideas now and i know he wants one anyways.

- Adoption fees from animal shelters and breed rescues range from $20-$300. You can find a shelter or rescue in your area by searching on www.petfinder.org. You can search by breed, age, gender, size, and location!
- all depends on what kind of german shepherd you want.. Working lines or not.. $500-$2500 depending.. i have seen them for even more.. Please check out the local shelter for a german Shepherd puppy before you buy..
- Buying from a good breeder (one who truly cares about their dogs and their offspring ) you are looking at anywhere from $1000 and up. I would spend time investigating this - go to several breeders and see what conditions they have their dogs in. You could also adopt from a German Shepherd Rescue League - they usually are able to match your needs with the right shepherd for you. I would not buy a shepherd from the want ads or from a pet store even if the price sounds good.
- It is very thoughtful for you to consider getting your boyfriend a dog for his birthday. But as much as you would like to surprise him with your gift you should talk to him about it first. Pets, especially large ones do not make good surprise presents. I know of many people who have taken this route for a boyfriend or girlfriend and 9 times out of 10 within a year the dog is given up. Talk to your boyfriend about it first. Although in conversation he may have talked about wanting a dog he may not have meant right now. Make sure he has the time to spend training a large dog, the space for a large dog to run a round and the money to care for it. A great idea might be to find a breeder or go to a rescue and "pick" one out for him but don't purchase it. Take a picture of the animal and put it in a card for him. Or buy a collar and leash and place the picture in it for him to open. Then if he is not yet ready for a dog your not stuck with a large problem. But have a back up gift and don't be offended he is not ready for a dog yet!
- I got fortunate and got mine for $500.00 8 years ago. I had asked the local police where they got their dogs from and they gave me the names of 2 breeders. These folks bred West German German Sheperds, not American. The Breeder I contacted told me his dogs go for $1700.00 (8 years ago) but he let his stud hit one of his buddies Bitches and his dogs (first litter) were going for around $500.00 so I got lucky. It probably depends on what part of the country you live in but if you want a quality animal ask your local Constables which breeders to contact, it'll be expensive but the animals should be Top Shelf.
