Can yorkie puppies have asthma?
My puppy, Oscar, coughs a lot when he wakes up in the morning and when he wakes up from naps. I was just wondering if maybe he had asthma, it is a hacky horrible sounding cough. If they can have asthma what should I do besides take him to the vet?

- I think most animals can suffer from Asthma or similar chest problems. Really the best thing to do is go to a vet as we can't tell on here what type of cough it is.
- Since it is when he first wakes up, it could be an allergy, or asthma, or it could be a symptom of an enlarged heart, which is SERIOUS. Anything you might give him on your own ( for allergies) could potentially be bad for him if it is a heart problem. But you can give him warm chicken soup to drink - no risk. Also, there is something called a "terrier cough", which is a hacking cough, but it would be unusual for that to be happening everytime he wakes up.
- your best bet is to take the dog to a vet - as to asthma I have never heard of that but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I have been breeding and showing dogs for over 35 years.
- all doggies can have asthma.the only thing i can think of is to get a vet to look at him.. it could be asthma,a cold, broncitis,, anything bronuler.. oops spelling so sorry.. bren
- Our Yorkie did this last fall (he was about 5 months old then). We took Jay Jay to our vet and had to put him on an antibiotic for a week...he had some congestion/bronchitis. Our vet said this is common in toy breeds, especially if they are almost always inside (heating/cooling systems). I wouldn't describe Jay Jay's cough as being horrible, though, it was just noticeable...if you ever have to describe something as horrible, get to the vet! After the medicine was completed, the coughing was gone. Our vet also said that asthma is very common in toy breeds (any breed of dog can have asthma) and to be sure and watch for any signs like coughing, wheezing, etc. Take Oscar to the vet and see what is actually wrong, then be sure to get info. from vet as to how you can help minimize the effects of whatever is wrong.
