- theres a lot to know about raising any puppy, go to your local pet store and purchase a book specifically on raising yorkies.
- Save the money on books and read everything you can on the internet about the breed. They are great little dogs, but hyper and need a lot of grooming.
- Get it used to having its teeth bruched from an early age as they often have bad teeth as they get older. Also they can be fussy eaters so try to get them on normal dog food, don't feed them table scraps or human food, it's bad for them.
- They are great little dogs. They love to please their owner. Since they are very small you shouldn't let them jump off of the furniture as they could break a leg very easily. Feed them dry food mostly as they need this for their teeth. Keep their behinds clipped as the doodles can get stuck in the long hair and cause problems. Also you should groom them on a daily basis. I have a 9 mos. old little guy and wouldn't give him up for the world. I just took him to the groomers a couple of weeks ago and had his nails clipped and a nice short puppy cut. He stays much cleaner with short hair and they also plucked some of the hair inside his ears which is a good idea. Hope this helps.
- Find a good breeder and ask them what books they recommend you read and what information they can give you. If they are going to sell you a pup then they will be happy to take the time and make sure you know how to care for it properly.
- I would recommend that you get some advice from your local breeders and get some literature. Always always do your homework before you decide to get a puppy. Get know the breeder to whom you would like to get your puppy from. How often do they have litters... If they are continually having litters there is a good chance these people are only doing it for the money. What kind of guarantee to they have? Are their hips and elbows OFA registered good or excellent? What kind of problems can you expect from this animal? If their is a problem with your dog can you depend on the breeder for advice, help or possibly a return home to the breeder if necessary. There are a whole lot of things to consider. It's up to you what you want
- Specific to Yorkies they very small dogs and can easily develop low blood sugar if not fed small amounts frequently. Their stomachs are very small and can't hold much fuel so make sure yours eats at regular intervals. And they can have horrible teeth. Many Yorkies don't lose the baby teeth as they should so, keep an eye on this. Allowing the adult teeth to come in with the baby teeth still in the mouth can really screw up your dogs bite and chewing ability. I have seen Yorkies with both sets of teeth still in the mouth! They look like sharks. If the baby teeth are not falling out, see your vet for extraction. What should you know about puppies in general? There is a lot to know about puppy/dog care. If you just got this pup, take it to the vet immediately. This is with any new pup. You want to make sure the pup has the proper vaccines & is in good health. Don't wait until your pup is ill to establish a relationship with a vet. Talk to your vet about flea control and parasites. These are big problems with any pup. Yorkies need grooming so unless you plan to take this on yourself; find a groomer and plan to go every month. Buy yourself a metal grooming comb and comb your dog as much as possible. Everyday is best. And don't forget the toenails. These need clipping every month. Overly long toenails can damage a dog's toes and feet. Almost forgot, the anal glands. On small breed dogs these can become inflammed or impacted. If you plan to groom the dog yourself, ask your vet to show you how to express the glands. Groomers do this as part of the service. Hope this helps.
- My yorkie was not hyper she just loved people. The smaller the dog the bigger the medical problems. They have problems with there knees and trachea's. My little yorkie died from a collapse treach and believe me I miss her something terrible because they are great lap dogs and want to be beside you where ever you are another problem is the teeth. Start teaching the baby from the start by doing dental care on a daily biases. the dog is like child. they need daily care. But the rewards are lots of love from that little heart. Each Yorkie is very different just like people s personalty's
- i would look online for anything super specific to breed, or ask your vet. i used to have a yorkie that i absolutely adored! he was a great dog. we had him for 11 years before he had to be put down because of his health. up until he passed he always had his puppy streak and his little quirks. he was absolutely afraid of thunderstorms and made sure someone was always awake with him while he was scared. i have found in talking to other yorkie owners that can be a yorkie thing. so i would recommend them, but be aware you mihgt learn to hate thunderstorms right along with them!
