Why are Yorkie puppies so expensive?
I am interested in purchasing a "pet" quality Yorkie. I am not into the "show" quality. All I want is a small god to love and care for. I just want to know why they cost so much.....

- yorkies are expensive because they come fresh from england.they are also known as a walking jewel.
- small and cute
- 1) They're small dogs 2) They're the second most popular dog. If you just want a pet quality dog, look around in shelters. http://www.petfinder.com
- It's basic economics. Supply versus demand! The demand is high, as yorkies are currently in vogue, therefore the price matches the demand. Add to that, it isn't cheap to breed quality pups. There's vet bills, food, time, energy, grooming supplies, wormer, vaccinations, whelping supplies, more vet care, more time, lots more energy, did I mention time? Even at those high prices that they charge, I can honestly tell you, they aren't getting rich if they are doing it correctly.
- They are very popular right now because a lot of people want them. Therefore they cost more as people are willing to pay more. In about 5 years when something else is popular, they will be a lot cheaper.
- They are such popular dogs, most people feel people will pay whatever to purchase one. Try looking on petfinder.com for a yorkie that is affordable.
- because they are pure bred.
- Yes, they are very expensive, because they are in such demand......and are so tiny, tiny dogs are always expensive, but so can the larger breeds. go to a shelter or call your local dog rescue club in yr area... be careful and don't buy from a pet-store, their dogs are sold to them by puppy mills and these puppies are always unhealthy all their life. or you can go on-line to akckennelclub.com, and get referred to a good reputable breeder, some of these breeders will also do a payment plan...as I do with Pet Quality only puppies Breeder/show/handler of Min. Schnauzers
- You need to be willing to look around a bit... I just did a search to find out how expensive they really were, and I found the range to be as low as $550 (VERY cheap) to $4000 (VERY expensive). Breeders can charge those prices for two reasons 1) people will pay it because they are "designer" right now and 2) it costs a LOT to breed dogs. It's not uncommon for the vet bills (between the puppies and the mom) to come up to that much, plus showing the parents to maintain good lines, food, sheer time invested, etc.
- I'm not sure what you consider expensive, but the average price for a pet-quality pure bred dog is anywhere from $400-$700. If Yorkies are more than that (not sure if they are - I've never checked their prices), it's probably just because they are currently one of the most popular/in-demand breeds, so some breeders will try to ask more, because they know people will pay it.
- Supply and demand! As long as people are buying them like crazy the longer the breeders can charge so much.
- Yorkies are expensive because there are people are willing to pay that much for them. Plus small breed dogs tend have small litters and often require c-sections which raise the costs of the breeding.
- The reason why they costs so much is because of breeding . Breeding dogs such as Yorkies need to have C- Section inorder for there pups to live . They cannot give birth naturally due to their tiny size . They also costs soo much because of their popularity right now . There in the same category as the Bulldogs . There also popular as well . " Pet " Quality Yorkies will cost around $500 - $1,000 from a reputable breeder becaise like i said , your still paying a small fortune . You can get one from a rescue group for probably around $400 or $300 . And you could probably get one from a shelter between $100 to $250 .
