Public Comments

  1. about 6 months for the females first heat cycle but i would wait for the sceond heat cycle at about 1 year old
  2. If you can't answer this question yourself, then you shouldn't breed. Besides, responsible breeders don't make a profit. But, to answer your question, small dogs usually reach sexual maturity at 2 years of age.
  3. first of all let me just say how irresponsible it is of you to get dogs for breeding while not actually knowing anything whatsoever about breeding a dog. most respectable breeders dont breed dogs under a year and a half or two years old. sometimes younger dogs arent as able to care for puppies as an older dog. if you seriously want to do this then you need to talk to some yorkie specific breeders.
  4. Your female will probably not go in to heat until she about 6-12 months. Some breeders will tell you not to breed them until they are a year old to give them time to develop. EDIT: Also, you should not breed your pups if the have either the same mother and/or father.
  5. if you are thinking of profit, think again. Breeding is not cheap. Many small dogs need a cecarian, which can cost $1000 and up. If there are any complications it can cost you even more. Add in the cost extra food, prenatal and post natal vet care, shots and worming for the puppies. Small dogs have smaller litters, so there are less puppies to sell to try to recoup all those expenses. If you are doing it right, breeding actually COSTS you money.
  6. It take the female 6 months to go into her first heat, but you should never breed her until she is atleast two. You should only breed if you show dogs, have all health test done, and are doing it to better the breed. Not to be a horrrible backyard breeder and wanting to make money, which you won't! Get them spayed and neuterd. Your risking there health.
  7. Wait until they reach physical maturity. That's in 9 more months. Then take them to shows, make sure they're exemplary for their breed, get them genetically tested, find them mates that counterbalance their faults, and - Oh, you want to make a PROFIT? I suggest learning to knit and making scarves to sell. You won't make any money off dog breeding - well, not a lot if you do it right, and you DO want to do right by your adorable little puppies, don't you? EDIT: Yes, you do have a "right" to breed your dogs - but the fact that you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD. If you want to get into breeding, good for you - I'm just assuming that you want to do it right. At six months of age, your female isn't going to be physically mature, so it's dangerous for her to have puppies (kind of like why it's not a good idea for people to start having babies when they get their first periods). Your desire for profits tells me that you need to start reading up before you get into this. Find a good breeder in your area who will help you out - maybe this is the beginning of a long love affair with Yorkies for you, maybe not. I don't mean to be rude, I just want to help you do right by the dogs. EDIT: In all reality, I doubt someone will swoop in off the streets to keep you from breeding if that's what you choose to do, and your dog MAY not need a c-section and everything MAY go well, but it only takes one emergency to lose your dog. What then? What happens if your darling dog dies? If you're going to breed, fine, but just because you have a "right" doesn't mean you don't have the responsibilities. While your dogs are growing up, educate yourself on risks of breeding. Find a breeder to talk to and help you out. See if you can help the breeder and find out it's what you want to do before you risk your dogs. Get involved in showing. Train your puppies - they'll be meeting lots of prospective puppy adopters and you want them to be well-behaved. Keep an eye out for issues in temperament and health - and if all goes swimmingly, best of luck to you. In all likelihood, however, SOMETHING WILL GO WRONG at one point or another. It's easier for all involved, as well as all the rescue workers, for you to get your puppies fixed and enjoy them as pets.
  8. Great - another clueless breeder making genetically defective dogs that will wind up being the nemesis of someones life and the dogs will wind up being euthanaisa practice for someone at a shelter! What a wonderful society we live in! :(
  9. leave them together right now and if they feel comfortable with each other they should mate. it will take about a year or longer before they start to mate. wait until the female dog has something like a period. it lasts about 7 days. she'll first bleed a dark red color and it will turn into a hay color on around the 7th day, when it's over. they should mate at around this time, when she's is attractive to other dogs. but make sure that other dogs won't come close to the female dog because they might mate with her instead. so make sure when this happens that only ur two yorkies are together. no other dogs.
  10. 6 Months. P.S. Don't let these "spay and neuter police" piss you off with their negative and rude answers. You have a right to breed your dogs if you want to, and you have a right to make money off your dogs if you want to. :) Breeding is cheap don't listen to the answerer who said its not. Your girl dog won't need a cesarean section, shes a yorkie not a bulldog. Hes just trying to scare you into not breeding. Good luck with your dogs. You'll have fun when the puppies arrive, trust me. additional comments: "blah blah blah don't breed for profit blah blah rant rant nag nag blah blah" Just ignore 'em. :)
  11. Wow, you just can't wait, can you? Whomever sold you two Yorkie puppies of opposite sexes at the same time should be shot. Your dogs should be two years old before they are bred (i.e. NOT BABIES). Some links to EDUCATE you while you wait those excruciating months before you can start using your new puppies as breathing ATM machines: http://www.adoptarescuepet.org/byb.htm http://www.21stcenturycares.org/misbreeding.htm http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/Fair/1901/chart.html http://www.dogplay.com/Breeding/ethics.html http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/skatekitten2288/Petneuter.jpg
  12. Oh my dear Lord, are you kidding? You need to get those pups to a loving home, and learn a little more about what it means to be responsible. Please, I beg you, DON'T MATE THOSE DOGS. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
  13. Here is some good info I hope you read carefully and follow the recommendations: http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/skatekitten2288/Petneuter.jpg http://www.learntobreed.com/ By the way you should not breed a dog until it is at least two years old. When you take her to the vet to have the necessary health and genetic testing done I am sure the vet can answer your questions.
  14. *sigh* If you do not already know the answer to this you should NOT be breeding. You should not be getting your knowledge on how to breed dogs via Yahoo! Answers.
  15. They should not be bred before they are two years old. Are you having the genetic testing done to make sure they are breeding quality? Don't you think the millions of dogs being killed in shelters every year because of not enough homes is enough? Why do you want to add to those numbers? There are too many backyard breeders now filling our shelters with dogs to be killed. Are you not aware that there are 15 dogs born for every one human? http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.cause&cgid=1&rgid=2&stid=10 Are you not aware that there are millions of dogs killed every year because of not enough homes? http://www.jour.unr.edu/outpost/voices/voi.valdyke.animal.html Are you not aware that only 1 dog in 10 gets a permanent home? www.safehavenforcats.com/main.htm Are you not aware that one female and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in just six years? http://www.metroplexanimalcoalition.com/SpayNeuter/didyouknow.html That coupled with the health benefits of spay/neuter WHY would you breed your dog? www.sniksnak.com/benefits.html http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/myths_and_facts_about_spaying_and_neutering.html
  16. You gotta be kidding me. You want to breed these dogs and you don't have a clue about breeding. Do you realize how many dogs are put down in the world every single day because there are to many dogs and not enough homes? Do you realize the main problem is backyard breeders like you. Do everyone a favor and get your dogs spayed/neutered. We don't need another litter of ill-bred dogs. Let your pets be pets.
  17. Bring your puppies to me I'll take care of them for you. Why? So I can have them spayed or neutered and find them a permanent loving home. You are incapable of caring for these pups if that is all you think you are going to do is make a buck. Dogs should not be bred until they are 2 yrs old or older. Are they registered? Are you USDA and/or State licensed to breed? There are many other things to take into consideration......... Sounds like you are on your way to becoming a BYB or puppy mill
  18. I think you're deplorable. these are living breathing animals, not a way for someone who doesn't know what they're doing to breed them. were you planning on starting a puppy mill? sure sounds like it to me. by the way, if you breed her in her first heat, the puppies will most likely kill her. they'll be full-size puppies, and she won't have finished growing herself. where did you get these poor dogs? from a pet store? no breeder would sell to you if they knew that's why you wanted the dog. if you want to make money, I would suggest the stock market. but, assuming that you're serious, what do you know about these animals? do you have their pedigrees? are you going to register the puppies? are you aware of the costs involved in caring for a litter? and that you will NEVER, EVER make a profit. why not? because there probably won't be more than 2 puppies in a litter. and what if there are complications when the female is whelping, like a puppy gets stuck in her, and has to be removed surgically? the puppy won't live, and if the mother does, she'll be spayed. what will you do with her then? just dump her out your car window onto the highway somewhere? I try to be nice, but people like you make me furiously angry. the things I want to say to you about this would get me banned. so, I'm just going to say that I think what you plan to do is immoral, and if I knew you, I would have the animals removed from your "tender mercies". you disgust me.
  19. Breeding dogs to make a profit! That is horrible! If you don't know anything about breeding then DON'T DO IT! Go to the pound and see how many unwanted animals there are, please don't contribute to pet over population. Dogs are not here to be profitable, they are here for companionship. Shame on you! Spay and neuter your dogs!
  20. Hello Back Yard Breeder! Before you start wrecking those pups by breeding too young, not getting proper vet care and over breeding go to your nearest dog pound and a couple of shelters. Watch the dogs/pups while they are being killed because of not enough homes. BACKYARD BREEDERS ARE - **Anyone who has a litter for fun, profit or by ‘accident’. **Anyone who is so uninformed that they think having AKC papers means that their pet is breeding quality. REDICULOUS!! **Anyone who advertises their litters in the local paper for sale. (respected breeders only advertise in trade magazines) **Anyone who thinks that by finding their puppies good homes that they somehow don’t have to play by the rules or take responsibility. MANY WILL STILL ULTIMATELY END UP IN THE POUND AFTER YEARS OF ABUSE OR NEGLECT!!! **Anyone who thinks they found their litter good homes, simply because everyone that took one, smiled honestly and ‘promised’ to treat them well.. Thus insisting on no background check, no enforceable contract or any type of follow up. A PERFECT RECIPE FOR A SAD LIFE FOR THE POOR PUPPY. **People will provide erroneous information to the potential adopters regarding the required care and treatment necessary for the pet - simply for their own personal gains and claim to know much more than they really do for ego boosts. **Respectable breeders will have walls adorned with trophies and certificates which represent the numerous championships they’ve acquired over the years. Up to 8 million healthy animals are killed in U.S. pounds and shelters every year. The majority of killing could easily be prevented by spaying OR neutering. Euthanasia is the single largest cause of death for dogs in the U.S. Each year 27 million DOGS are born. 8 or more million we classify as "surplus" ARE killed. That's about ¾ million per month. These numbers do not include the millions of dead dogs whose bodies we scrape off the streets, the growing number that are put to sleep at vets’ offices or the hundreds of thousands THAT ARE abandoned. LET'S NOT FORGET THE severely neglected or abused ones who never make it to our shelters to be counted and OR EUTHANIZED. The ten million figure represents those we "MUST" kill because they are unwanted!!! Most of these animals are young and healthy; in fact, it is estimated that a majority are less than one year of age. The problem is simple: we have too many dogs...Too many for the too few homes available TO THEM. The solution we have opted for is to kill the extras. This solution has been considered acceptable by default, as though there were no other way to control the crisis. And we spend over $11 billion every year destroying "man's best friend." A common sense look that you cannot deny or argue with: If you were part of a company who made ‘pets’ and every year for the past 20 years, you had been overstocked to the point of having to dispose of the overstocked inventory, what would you suggest they do this year to improve? So, if you KNOW we are killing this vast number of innocent, loving animals each year, why in the world would you think that having a litter of puppies or kittens is OK? Why is this happening in the United States today? The number one biggest contributor to the problem is the "backyard breeder" not the puppy mills. This is a name that has become unpopular and no one wants to admit they are a "backyard breeder".(Anyone having a litter in their home with just the family pet as one of the breeding parents, and advertise in the local papers) Many people do not even realize they are part of the problem. This is what I need to address in this post. The only way to stop the needless killing of dogs is to stop the needless breeding of them. Every breed of dog recognized by the AKC has a written standard, a blueprint of what the dog should look like and act like. These standards were written so that all would know what a quality example of the breed is and strive to produce dogs that meet or exceed the standard in health, temperament and appearance. To be sure you are breeding dogs that meet these standards, your dogs must be judged by people who have a lifetime of experience among the breed. If your personal dog has not yet been in front of a judge, then you do NOT have an AKC standard dog, you have one that is pet quality and that is fine. AKC papers DO NOT signify a dog with Breeding quality standards!!!!! . A pet is to be loved, cherished, trained, cared for, spoiled and bragged about, but it is NEVER to be bred. No matter how cute or sweet the dog may be, if it is not up to the standard, you have no business breeding it. Even if you have a purebred dog this does not give you the right to breed it. Most purebred dogs are not breeding quality. If you breed your pet quality dog, you are a "backyard breeder", whether you breed the dog in your backyard, garage, living room or an expensive hotel room, the term is still backyard breeder. If your pet quality dog has AKC papers, that's nice but it doesn't change anything. You still don't have the right to breed it. If your pet quality dog cost you $500 be glad you had the money to afford it. You still have no right to breed it. Do you think you can RECOUP your $500 INVESTMENT if you breed your pet dog? OR DO YOU THINK YOUR pet dog is a color or size that isn't in the standard but you just know everyone will want buy a pup if you breed her? Shame on you! Now you are a "backyard breeder" with the purpose of breeding pups for fun and profit. That is despicable!!! If the price for a tail dock or an ear crop seems high to you, what are you going to do when your beloved pet needs an emergency C-section? Will you even be there to know if she is in trouble? Would you recognize trouble before its too late AND BE MONETARILY ABLE TO SEEK VETERINARY HELP? If you still want to breed your pet but need to ask, "Who's suppose to cut off the tails and ears"? Ask yourself, "What the Hell am I thinking?" Do you think genetic testing is something they used in the OJ trial but has nothing to do with your dog-breeding career you are a "backyard breeder". "Backyard breeders" sell pups that aren't up to the standard of the breed. They do this for many reasons. None are good enough reasons to contribute to the killing of dogs. Period. "Backyard breeders" will swear all of their pups went to a good home. They believe this, but it's not NECESSARILY true. Some may have been lucky enough to go to a good home at the time of adoption, but more than half of them will end up dead, in a shelter alone, on a cold table with a needle sticking out of their leg. Why? Because the Backyard Breeder didn’t follow through or even know enough about adoptions to ask the right questions up front. Some of those good homes will get tired of the dog and they will just give it away to anyone who is willing to take it. Some of your beloved dog's children will end up living alone in a backyard, barking all night, cold and neglected until the guardian gets complaints and then that pups will be dead. Some will be starved and beaten. Some will be bred until they die from THE MANY BIRTHS. Some will end up in rescue and I will have to find space for it in my home. I will GIVE IT LOVE TO SHOW IT that not all humans are bad. I will train it, and feed it the proper food so it can heal, MENTALLY AS WELL AS PHYSICALLY. I will take the fleas off and I will get rid of the worms. I will give it the shots it should have had but no one remember to DO it. I will do these things because the "backyard breeder" didn't. I will spay or neuter that pup before I find it a new home so that I will never have to rescue one of it's pups. THAT WAY I CAN BE ASSURED it will never end up in the hands of another "backyard breeder" looking to make profit from puppies. "Backyard breeders" are not responsible pet guardians. They claim that they love the dogs but it's not true because they don't really want to be bothered with doing all that it takes to breed ethically. They love feeling important when they say, "I breed mini schnauzers". But breeding pet dogs isn't something to be proud of. IT'S a shame on our society. It's the reason for the killing that goes on in shelters. Why do you want to be part of that? Do you want to be respected? Spay or neuter you pet dog. There's really no other way. The kind of homes you want for your pet pups don't want to buy from you. They are looking for responsible, respected breeders who are doing something for the breed as a whole. Most of those WHO WILL BUY your pups are the kind of people I wouldn't give a dog I didn't like to. They are the ones who will turn your puppy into a shelter when the novelty wears off. That's a PROVEN fact. Want to stop the problem of killing 1 Million dogs a month all over America? Spay or neuter your pet dog now and tell everyone you know to do the same. Leave the breeding to the people who are doing something to better the breed. DO you want to have a litter of puppies to show your children the miracle of life? Then to be fair and honest, volunteer yourself and your children to work at the county dog pound for no less than thirty days to show them the miracle of death. AS A "BACKYARD BREEDER" THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE CONTRIBUTING TO. YOU ARE CONTRIBUTING TO THIS MASSIVE PROBLEM NATIONWIDE.
  21. Yikes!! You do not mate dogs JUST to make a profit. Actually breeding is not all that profitable. BEFORE you breed you should get a mentor which is someone who has been breeding dogs properly for many years who can tell you all the ins and outs of breeding. This takes time and effort on your part. This breeder should breed show quality dogs (this is known because the dogs being breed have won dog shows). (Also something YOU should be doing as well.) They have a vet who's advice and treatment they agree with and trust. They should treat their breeding dogs like family members meaning they are NOT kept in cages and only there for the sole purpose of breeding. You should have genetic testing done on BOTH the male and the female to ensure you are not passing down defects to the puppies. You will need to have a great deal of money at your disposal to have vet checks during the pregnancy and be able to seek medical treatment should something to awry with the Mama or her pups. It is not a money making venture really. It is costly and time consuming and dangerous to you Mama dog. You must wait between breedings too.. you cannot get the Mama pregnant everytime she goes into heat.
  22. DO NOT BREED FOR PROFIT......dogs should not be bred for profit it is wrong millions of puppies purebred or mixed get put to sleep a year how can you justify brining more lives into this worldwhen you can not 100% garuntee lifetime homes.....beised if you are looking for a profit you wont be getting much of one you do at all and there are reasons behind this.... 1. after you take entire litter to be vaccinated when they are 6 and 8 weeks old which can run about 40 bucks just for shots. take 40 times maybe 4 cuz yorkies ussually have small litters thats a 160 bucks per visit. 2 then the worming which will cost you approx 20 at the retail store for a good wormer or the vet can do even more expensive. they will need to be wormed. 3. you need to get them heartwormed tested more money. your looking all in all at very least 200$ per puppy per visit just for vet. 4. then you have to feed the mother a high protein diet for pregnant females...ussually a puppy grade is good. good dog foods coat any where from 20$ for just a 8 pound bag the good thing about these brands is that they poop less, are better nutrition, and you feed less then what you would with say pedigree 5. most people are not willing to pay 400-1000$ for a puppy with no papers, even if you have papers you better have blood line and be able to prove they have the stuff for show. 6. you also dont know if your dogs will be healthy enough to breed later you will have to have them thoroughly examined before you do so. 7. i hope your dogs did not come from the same litter, that is a huge no no you never breed with in the immediete family unless you seriously know what you are doing....and from the sounds of it you dont. 8. can you afford if something goes wrong after the pups are born? what if the mom doesnt want them? can you feed them every 3-4 hours, help them pass bowel movement and urine, keep them warm and clean like the mom would? what if they get sick even if the mom takes care of them do you have what could be potentially thousands of dollars to cover the bill the vet will present you with? All in all this is a very bad idea unless you know what you are doing....i would strongly suggest not breeding until you educate urself. i dont mean to be upsetting or the bearer of bad news or to be rude but come on look at all the faces at petfinder.com who have no homes in just the yorkie department nationwide those dogs will probably be put to sleep if no homes are found....please rethink your decision to breed.
