Should i let my English Bulldog have her puppies naturally?

I went to the vet today for her check up and he said that she is very healthy. He also said that it was OK if we let her have her puppies naturally, that is with no c-section as many breeders do. He said that over 50% of English Bulldogs have their dogs naturally.

  1. I would let her try to have her puppies naturally, but under close supervision. If she starts having any troubles, than you could bring her in for a c-section, but until it comes to that, why not give her chance to do it naturally?
  2. You can certainly try, but in my opinion, it would be smart to have your vet on stand-by in case she needs to be rushed in. And for you to make sure she's not left alone when she's due.
  3. You should have a C section done I think its safer for the Pups.
  4. Take his advice and allow her to labour naturally - but let the vet know as soon as she goes into labour, so that they are prepared in the event of her needing an emergency c-section - hopefully all will be well and you won't need their help - in which case, don't forget to phone to tell the vet all went well and schedule the b*tche's check up with him. If you are concerned, talk over warning signs with your vet well in advance, so that you are happy in your own mind that you know what is a problem and what isn't - and remember, you can always phone the vet for advice during labour if you aren't quite certain whether you should be worried or not - just don't panic.
  5. I think that she should have her puppies naturally, but as soon as she begins labor, bring her to the vet, so that way the vet is there and he doesn't have to leave the vet office.
  6. You could try but most times they have to have a c-section. The reason for this Is because Bulldogs puppies have such large heads.
  7. Did your vet x-ray her and measure heads vs pelvis? You would be wise to let her try. Just watch her for any signs of distress. And call your vet when she goes into labor, so he will be able to section her if needed.
  8. there is a reason that breeders of EB have c-sections, more moms and pups where dieing than living. if you are willing to chance it then do it but i can't tell you to chance your dogs life. make sure ahead of time that your vet. will be available if she has problems at 2or3 in the morning. most females have their pups at that time so you will be up all night. know what to do and know when she is in trouble and you need to call the vet. the outcome will be totally up to you. good luck
  9. If your vet XRayed and measured skull size in comparison to pelvic size, and thinks it's OK, then I would try the natural. However, if this is your first whelping, I would be less likely to try natural, unless I had an experienced breeder there as well. Will your mentor come and assist? (I had a girl I'm mentoring call me the minute her girl went into labour, and I drove 3 hours to her house to be there to help). It is very important in breeds that frequently need assistance to be well educated on the danger signs, so you know when and if she needs help. Hesitation can be the difference between life and death of the mom and whelps. Make sure your vet is aware of the due date, make sure you are aware of the emergency procedures in your vet hospital. Call the vet as soon as she starts labour, and keep them updated. Good luck.
  10. Hi. Hi. As your other readers mentioned, make sure the Vet will be readily available, in case you need to make a trip. I agree with your Vet. It's 50/50 Just a couple of other tips. Make sure you are prepared!! Have a insulated cooler, hot water bottle, and towels ready to go, as you will need a good way to transport puppies. Blanket for Mom for her comfort, & to protect your car seats. It's also a good idea to have scissors, thread, and wash cloths ready in case you have to cut cords & stimulate puppies. Make sure you have a bulb syringe to clear throat & nostrils if needed. Heat lamps or heating pad to help keep pups warm. If using a heating pad, monitor this closely as the trick is enough to keep puppies warm, and not so much as to cause dehydration. I also recommend having canned concentrated goat's milk [mix with 50% water] & plastic syringe, to help with feeding if necessary. Also stock up on your choice of caffeine [this is for you] as you will need to monitor every 2-3 hours for the first few days. Also watch closely, as it is easy for a pup to get crushed, or suffocated accidently with this breed. If you have other questions, feel free to send me an e-mail at any time. My best wishes, and Good Luck to you, Mom & pups.
  11. Do you know if your English Bulldog is in the 50% category of dogs that have their pups naturally or the 50% of them that have to have C-sections?
