Can a pit bull puppy and basenji puppy be raised together?

I have a pure bred Pit Bull who is 8 months old and we were thinking of getting another dog for him to play with. I've been wanting a Basenji for years now but wasn't sure if they would work together. Does anyone know or have a clue??

  1. if they are raised to together they will be ok.
  2. Yes they could get along well together. Just make sure your Basenji is of the opposite gender of your Pit. Basenji tend to get along better with housemates of that opposite gender.
  3. any dogs will work together as long as they are brought up correctly with the right manners and dicipline, they should be great togehter good luck
  4. so I think they will be fine, we have a pit bull and he is so nice when meet another kind of dogs.. but the other dogs are the one who get him mad
  5. I wouldn't take a chance. Pit bulls aren't that friendly anyways and basenjis like to play and are nice and calm. Except the basenjis bark is horrible. It's sounds like someone is dying .Unless you raised the pitbull and basenji pup to get along since they are young . Good Luck
  6. yes, as long as you rasied them right, it should be okay.
  7. Actually that depends wholly on the dog you already have. While some pit bulls get along with other animals perfectly fine, some do not and it usually doesn't show up until the dog is a bit older than yours. You simply cannot discount that these breeds were bred to be animal aggressive. You could get another dog and try it, but keep in mind down the line it might not work. Here's a link to an article from pit bull rescue about owning more than one dog. HTH http://www.pbrc.net/second_dog.html - points out things to help you decide ** OK a thumbs down? Ok here's another web site with breed information. Mind you these aren't anti pit bull sites, quite the opposite! http://mprgroup.net/misc/breedinfo.html Please research your breed. It seems other people are basing their answers on their dogs, their breeds, and/or haven't researched at all.
  8. It is not as though you are trying to introduce two adult dogs that have never been socialized... You are introducing two playful puppies who will be raised together ultimately making them each others best friend. They will be fine and breed does not play a role in this at all, socialization does.
  9. yes thety will,be fine together. I have 2 jack russell min in mix , 1 min pin and 1 german shepard black lab mix he is the youngest out of the 4 he is 9 mos old and the others are 7 , 5 ,& 4 and they get along fine together. 3 males and my little girl Misty and they are all fixed. And yes the 3 males get along great ofcours if they was fixed I would have trouble. Good luck on your new puppy
  10. of course any breed can just make sure they treat each other with respect
  11. If the two are raised together, I think they'll be fine. Besides, having another puppy will be great socilization... not just for the pit, but for both. I have two cats that have never seen a dog in thier life. One is 8 years and the other is 1. When I brought home a 9 week old puppy, needless to say, their kitty faces were pretty shocked :] My pup is now 8 months old and the three of them get along just fine. My older cat is still unsure, but he's come a long way from hissing at the puppy every time she came near him :D You and your two puppys will be fine. Just be sure you train the two apart... otherwise they'll get distracted by the other and you'll never get them trained Good luck hope that helps :D
  12. I personally would not trust a pit bull around other dogs. Don't get me wrong, I love this breed and would love to have one, but dogfighting and canine aggression are a part of this breed. And the way a puppy acts may not be the way an adult dog will act. Your pup may get long fine with other dogs right up until it reaches about 18 months of age, then it outgrows its puppy attitude and will start acting like an adult dog, and this may mean sudden dog aggression where none existed before. If you insist on a friend for your pit bull get one of the opposite sex and neuter them both. Keep an eye on your pit bull when it gets about 18 months. If there is major aggression, separate them.
  13. As long as you raise them together from pups I don't see why not. people have given pit's a bad name. I own a 7 month old right now and last summer put one down from old age. He was 13 in human years. I never had a problem with him being around other dogs. It's all in how you raise them and what you teach them. My neigbor has a male basenji and he's great. What I think my dog loves about him is that he doesn't bark. You can get your dog used to any animal as long as they meet on neutral grounds. Right now the Pit you have thinks that's his place and nobody better come trying to take over. If you take him outside on the curb to meet his new friend he won't feel the need to get extra protective over what he feel belong to him. Try to keep treating him the same, it's easy to forget that they don't understand that a new baby needs more attention. Try letting him be the parent, my pit adopted my mothers pomeranian and let me tell you she thinks she's a big muscular pit too.
