Rescued pit bull puppy, how should I train him?

I just rescued a 7 week old pit bull from the shelter. The people there told me he would need special training but didnt tell me what kind. They mentioned food regection from strangers..in puppy classes they make the people ask strangers to give their dog a treat for social skills. I am not new to dogs but am new to the breed. Are there any training styles that work better then others, or ones that should be avoided?

  1. Other than obedience class, training a pittie is like training other dogs except many people will be waiting for you or the dog to make a mistake so they can stereotype you both. As for the food rejection, I think it's a great idea for everyone to teach their dog this, many creeps out there will poison a dog for something stupid like barking at them.
  2. always make sure you are consistent. definatley get enrolled in obedience right away. and something that may be very helpful is strive for canine good citizen. b/c in that case, you will be focusing on these things. in order to get your certification or whatever. and if you take cgc classes. they will help you to train him for those specific needs. and food is one of their goals
  3. Not to be mean, but pit bulls come from planet earth and they train just as any other dog. I've had several and currently own 2 and they are exceptionally smart and so well behaved. They're actually smarter than my boxer and shepherd mix.
  4. You should probably crate train, food train, housetrain etc. by the way! you just made my day! thanks for saving a Pit Bull!
  5. APBTs aren't much different from any other breed. Just because he's a "pit bull" doesn't mean he needs any extra classes that you wouldn't take any other breed too. Obedience classes aren't needed, but they wouldn't hurt and would be a good bonding experience. The only advice than I can give you when it comes to raising and training an APBT (and this goes for just about every dog breed out there): YOU are alpha. These dogs are bright and if they can manipulate you to get their way and walk all over you, they will. Your pup won't understand pack hierachy right now, but once he gets older he'll test his boundaries and you need to put him in his place. Once your dog gets your alpha, it should be smooth sailing from then on. Please remember that APBTs have a high prey-drive and can be very dog-aggressive (dog-aggression doesn't usually show up till they're mature at two years old, but it can show up earlier), so be careful and have a control of your animal if you decide on taking classes with other dogs. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't socialize your pup with other dogs, because you definitely should, but have control at all times when he gets older.
