- www.petfinder.com Find a local breed rescue, ask to be wait listed for a pup if they don't have any right now. You need to be VERY careful if you buy from a breeder- too many people breeding unstable, unpredictable pits out there- the breed tends to attract some ignorant, nasty folks only interested in having 'vicious' dogs (yes,I know there are both wonderful pits and pit owners out there, just hoping the poster will not run into the OTHER kind).
- Unless you are buying one from someone who refers to them by their proper AKC breed name 'Staffordshire Terriers' then you have not found a reputable breeder. Search for a breeder who has enough knowledge and sense to call them what they are. Everyone else is just a back yard breeder.
- I hope you don't live in PG County...I'm pretty sure they've outlawed owning Pitbulls there due to attacks and people using them for fighting.
- If you go to akc.org there is a search box where you can get results on breed rescues, breeders, and shelters. If you want to evaluate the breeder yourself, try looking into local newspapers. You will need to ask alot of questions
- If you live in Prince George's county, you won't be able to own a Pit Bull. Even if you don't live in PG, you will want to check your local statutes. I also believe Waldorf in Charles County has a ban on the breed. Also, ask yourself WHY you want a Pit Bull. If it's because they look "cool" or because they're popular with your buddies, you shouldn't bother. And if you have young children, PLEASE think hard about your decision. Do your research.
